DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team won its first home dual meet of the season,
139-87, against Calvin College on Friday night at the Matthaei.
Among the highlights were
Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) and
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich./Adams) each earning NCAA “B” qualifiers in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.66, 1:06.47).
Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) also made a “B” cut with a first-place time of 17:54.91 in the 1650 freestyle, as she and
Stephanie Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) went one-two in the event (18:08.91). Leix also won the 200 freestyle (2:01.05).
Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.) improved her “B” time with a win in the 100 backstroke (58.35).
Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) bested her prior national cut in one-meter diving (272.92) with a first-place finish, while
Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich.) made her first cut on that board (263.62) and took third.
Other winners Friday night included Christina Busquets Garcia (Banyoles, Spain) in the 50 free (25.07),
Agata Zalewska (Swietochlowice, Poland) in the 100 butterfly (1:01.12), Scott in the 100 free (54.03),
Kelsey Dischler (Macomb, Mich./Henry Ford II) in the 500 free (5:17.21), and
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) in three-meter diving (274.27).
The 200 medley relay of Franklin, Gonzalez Pena,
Alex Malfroid (Shelby Twp., Mich./Eisenhower), and
Nicole Kudla (Lake Orion, Mich.) also came in first (1:49.04).
Wayne State will wrap up the 2010 calendar year at the three-day Nike Invitational, Dec. 2-4 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
