GAME STORYLINES
The Wayne State women's basketball team will square off against two unfamiliar foes this weekend as they continue their road ways at Lewis on Friday (11/19) and Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday (11/21).
The last time the Warriors ran up and down the hardwood with the Flyers was Nov. 18, 1989, and Nov. 27, 1993, with the Rangers.
WSU is 0-2 for only the ninth time in school history. In games following an 0-2 start, the Warriors are 3-5.
ON THE BENCH
Gloria Bradley, the longest tenured women's basketball coach in Wayne State University history, is in her 11th season at WSU and her 18th as a head coach. Bradley's record at Wayne State is 116-158, while her career record stands at 230-227. Her 230 wins ranks 47th amongst active coaches in Division II.
In Bradley's tenure, the Warriors have began a year 0-2 three times. She is 2-1 in games following an 0-2 start.
This will be the first time Bradley has coached against Lewis and UWP.
Lisa Carlsen is in her fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at Lewis. Carlsen has guided the Flyers to a 48-39 record during her tenure.
She led the Flyers to their second consecutive appearance in the Great Lakes Valley Conference semifinals in 2010.
Jenny Kenesie is in her ninth season at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Kenesie is 127-94 during her career at UWP. Last year, Kenesie led the Rangers to their best season in school history by finishing 23-8 and returning to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time.
On the way, the Rangers captured the school's first basketball division championship and GLVC Tournament championship game.
SERIES NOTES
Wayne State trails Lewis 4-1 in the all-time series.
In their last meeting, the Warriors fell at home, 79-69 on Nov. 18, 1989. WSU will seek its first road win over Lewis.
Wayne State holds a 2-1 advantage in the series against Wisconsin-Parkside. The Warriors won their only contest at UWP (65-54) in the school's first meeting on Jan. 4, 1984.
The last time the two teams' played was Nov. 27, 1993. The visiting Rangers won 67-58. The previous year, WSU beat UWP, 91-83, at the Matthaei Center.
WARRIOR NOTEBOOK
-- After grabbing a career-high five rebounds at USI (11/12), sophomore guard
Tyler Hardy tied that mark at KWC (11/14). She also scored a career-best 17 points versus the Panthers. She is leading the team in scoring (14.0 ppg) and shooting percentage (.526).
-- Junior point guard
Felicia Thomas opened the season at USI (11/12) by posting a career-high total in assists (6) to go along with 10 points and five rebounds. Thomas followed it up with 14 points and five rebounds at KWC (11/14). She has dished out a team-best 3.5 apg and is second in scoring (12.0 ppg).
-- Sophomore guard
Paige Sickmiller recorded a career-high in points (12) at USI (11/12), and then posted a career-best in rebounds (9) and minutes played (32) at KWC (11/14). She is the Warriors leading rebounder at 6.5 rpg.
-- Freshman center
Lauryn Robinson started the first two contests of her collegiate career. Robinson is second on the team in shooting percentage (.500), averaging 7.5 ppg.
SCOUTING LEWIS
Lewis began the year with a road loss at Saginaw Valley State 75-70.
Senior Jenny Turpel (24 points, 10 rebounds) and junior Lory Shaw (16 points, 10 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles for the Flyers, who shot 36.4% from the field in defeat.
Three Flyers scored in double-figures as Lewis won its home opener over Upper Iowa 70-58 on Monday (11/15).
Senior Kelly Monaco hit four three-pointers, all in the first half to finish with a team-best 16 points. Sophomore Sam Rinehart tallied 14 points, making all seven free throws she attempted. Turpel added 12 points and three steals.
SCOUTING WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE
Wisconsin-Parkside won its home opener 77-74 over Concordia-St. Paul last Saturday (11/13).
Junior Brittany Beyer scored 20 points, junior Amy Selk had 11 points and senior Brittany Hogen added 10 for the Rangers.
UWP hosts Indiana University Northwest on Friday (11/19).
UW-Parkside was picked to win the GLVC North after receiving 13 first-place votes and 65 points overall.
OPENING WEEKEND
The last three meetings between Wayne State and Southern Indiana had been decided by a combined nine points. This time around, the game was close, but the scoreboard indicated a double-digit win for the host Screaming Eagles, 81-71, in the 2010-11 season opener.
Sickmiller led with a career-high 12 points, all in the first half, while Hardy contributed 11 points and grabbed a career-high five rebounds off the bench.
The Warriors fell to 0-2 as they were outscored 15-6 in overtime, on their way to an 81-72 defeat at Kentucky Wesleyan.
Hardy had a career-high 17 points, while Thomas chipped in 14 points and five rebounds. Sickmiller led the Warriors with a career-high nine rebounds.
