* GAME STORYLINES
Coming off its last-second upset win over then-undefeated Ashland, the Wayne State women's basketball team dropped a 61-55 decision at Saginaw Valley State last Thursday (12/9). The Warriors look to get back on track as they host Ohio Dominican on Thursday (12/16) and then travel to Tiffin (12/18) for a Saturday afternoon contest.
* ON THE BENCH
Gloria Bradley, the longest tenured women's basketball coach in Wayne State University history, is in her 11th season at WSU and her 18th as a head coach. Bradley's record at Wayne State is 117-163, while her career record stands at 231-232. Her 231 wins ranks 47th amongst active coaches in Division II.
Nathan Bellman is in his fifth season as the head coach at Ohio Dominican, compiling a 78-50 record since taking over in 2006.
He guided the Panthers to back-to-back AMC Tournament Championships and NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. Pam Oswald is in her fourth season as the head mentor of the Tiffin women's basketball team.
Oswald has guided the Dragons to a 38-78 record.
* WARRIOR NOTEBOOK
-- Sophomore
Tyler Hardy has been a spark off the bench this season, scoring double-figures in seven of Wayne State's first eight games. The last player to put together such a stretch was
Jasmine McCall in 2008-09, when she scored double-digits in the first eight contests. Hardy followed up two straight 18-point performances vs. Lake Erie (12/2) and Ashland (12/4) with 16 points at Saginaw Valley State (12/9). She also tied career-highs in rebounds (5) and assists (5). Hardy leads the Warriors in scoring at 14.5 ppg, which is 10th best in the GLIAC.
-- Sophomore
Deanna Crumpton scored all eight of her points at Saginaw Valley State (12/9) in the final 7:13 of the contest. Crumpton scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds vs. Ashland (12/4). Her point total tied a career-high set last season at Saginaw Valley State (2/4). Crumpton is third on the team in scoring (8.1 ppg) and tied for second in rebounding (3.5 rpg).
-- Junior
Kiara Smith's 11 points at Saginaw Valley State was the fifth time Smith has hit the double-digit mark this season. She set career-high point totals at Lewis (11/19) and Wisconsin-Parkside (11/21). Smith started the two-game trip by tallying a then career-high 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and then in her first start of the season against the Rangers, she put in a 17-point effort. Her previous high was 15 last season at Hillsdale College (1/9/10). Smith is the Warriors second-leading scorer (10.1 ppg.) and leads the team in assists per game (3.1).
* SCOUTING OHIO DOMINICAN
Ohio Dominican is 1-6 on the season and 0-3 in the GLIAC.
The Panthers grabbed the lead on four different occasions in the second half at home against Malone on Saturday (12/11), but the Panthers fell 77-70. Meredith Fox scored 16 points and had seven rebounds.
On Thursday (12/9), ODU trailed Michigan Tech by 16 at halftime, and was eventually defeated, 72-58, in the Panthers' GLIAC home-opener. Fox led Ohio Dominican with 14 points and five rebounds.
ODU picked up its lone win of the season versus Cedarville (11/23), 51-49.
* SCOUTING TIFFIN
After getting off to its best start (5-0) in 18 years, Tiffin (5-3, 1-2 GLIAC) has lost three straight games.
The Dragons dropped a 64-61 decision to No. 15 Michigan Tech on Saturday (12/11). Mandy Jaeb led the Dragons with 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Prior to its defeat at home to the Huskies, Tiffin lost at Northern Kentucky, 63-45. Jessica Harris finished with a team-high 16 points.
After beginning conference play with a 75-65 win at Ferris State (12/2), the Dragons suffered an 84-72 setback at Grand Valley State (12/4). Jaeb scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting in Tiffin's win, and then followed it with a 16-point performance in the defeat against the Lakers. Five Dragons, including Jaeb, scored in double-figures.
* BATTLE TO THE END
Too little, too late defined the Wayne State women's basketball teams 61-55 defeat at Saginaw Valley State (3-4, 1-1 GLIAC), Thursday night (12/9).
Playing from behind the entire game, missed chances hurt the Warriors down the stretch, halting the comeback effort as WSU nearly overcame a 14-point deficit in the second half.
Having opportunities to take the lead or tie, Wayne State was held scoreless in the final 1:07 of the contest.
Down 54-52 with 1:35 remaining, Hardy had her pass stolen. At the other end, Brittany Burkhardt's lay-up gave the host a four-point cushion.
Hardy would answer with 1:07 left, nailing a deep triple from the corner to put the Warriors within one, 56-55.
However, following a lay-up from Marah Kyle, a turnover from
Kiara Smith with 33 seconds left, gave the ball and the game to the home team.
An 8-4 run to close the first half helped the Cardinals to a 30-24 halftime lead, and the momentum carried over as SVSU began the second half on a 7-3 run.
Hardy led Wayne State (1-7, 1-2 GLIAC) with 16 points, five rebounds and tied a career-high by dishing out five assists. Smith also had five assists to go along with her 11 points.
Crumpton scored all eight of her points in the final 7:13 of the game.
Paige Sickmiller had seven points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
