Detroit, Mich. – Amelia Davis' tip-in as time expired gave the Wayne State women's basketball team its first win of the season over undefeated Ashland,
77-75, Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors, who were 0-6 on the year, also ended a five-game losing streak to the Eagles, last winning on Dec. 8, 2007.
On top of hitting the game-winner, Davis drilled a three-pointer with 49 seconds left to put the Warriors ahead, 75-72. But, the Eagles' Jena Stutzman answered with a three of her own with 23 ticks left. Stutzman led five Ashland players in double-figures with 19 points and six assists.
Similar to Davis, sophomore forward
Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) was huge down the stretch, scoring five of her game-high 22 points in the final 1:23. Crumpton tied a career-high and also grabbed a season-high seven rebounds.
Wayne State never trailed in the game until Ashland's Rachel Poorman made a lay-up with 3:27 left. The rest of the way, the score would be tied five times and the lead would change hands twice.
WSU started the second half on an 8-3 run, but the Eagles soared back with six points in a hurry, leading to a Wayne State timeout with 17:04 left. Out of the break, the Warriors outscored the Eagles 15-9, taking a nine-point lead with 9:43 left. From there, Ashland chipped away at the WSU lead before climbing in front with under four minutes to go.
The Warriors began the game much like they started the second half, with an 8-2 run in the first four minutes.
Sophomore
Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) capped off a 9-4 run over the next two and a half minutes, with a three-point bucket from the corner, giving the Warriors a 17-6 lead with 13:20 remaining in the first half.
However, after a timeout, Ashland responded with a 9-0 run of its own.
Hardy came back with four straight from the free-throw line, keeping the home team on top 21-15.
Both squads went back-and-forth over the next few minutes, with the Warriors keeping the advantage. A lay-up from Hardy – who scored 18 points for the second game in a row – with 6:00 minutes left in the half put the Warriors up seven, but a 6-0 run from the Eagles over the next two and a half minutes, closed the gap to one.
After a timeout from WSU, a lay-up from Crumpton put Wayne State up three, and after a few traded buckets, the Warriors held onto its three point lead into the half.
Latosha Beasley (Flint, Mich./Northern) scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Warriors travel to Saginaw Valley this coming Thursday for a date with the Cardinals. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
The game was live on Comcast 900 and will be replayed six times over the next three weeks.
