* GAMES 21-22 STORYLINES
Wayne State begins a four-game homestand to conclude its home schedule. Thursday's contest against Hillsdale will be televised statewide on Comcast Channel 900.
The Warriors lost twice on the road last week and have suffered setbacks in seven of the last 10 games.
WSU is tied-for-sixth in the GLIAC with Hillsdale.
* SAGINAW VALLEY RECAP
The host Cardinals led 4-1 until
Bryan Wright drained a triple at the 15:56 mark as the Warriors were held without a field goal for the first four minutes. SVSU's Chris Webb hit his own three-pointer 30 seconds later and the game would never be tied again. A layup by
Jerry Oden at the 14:31 mark pulled WSU within one at 7-6.
The Cardinals scored the next five points until a jumper by
Dale Brundidge.
Wayne State trailed 14-8 at the midpoint of the first half but outscored the hosts 10-7 over the next five minutes to make it a three-point contest at 21-18.
Six straight SVSU points appeared to seal the deal (64-53), but Wayne State responded with a 10-2 run to pull within three (66-63) on Wright's fifth triple with 16.1 seconds left.
Wright tallied a game-high 21 points (5-8 3-PT, 6-6 FT), while
Mike Hollingsworth added 11 points.
* LAKE SUPERIOR RECAP
WSU struggled from the foul line in the second half (7-of-16) in falling at Lake Superior.
The Lakers scored seven of the first nine points. A triple by
Bryan Smothers at 17:29 followed by a three-pointer from
Larry Edwards gave WSU its only lead of the game at 8-7.
LSSU went on a 19-5 run over the next 11 minutes to grab a 26-13 advantage with 5:32 left before intermission. Wayne State had an 11-5 run to pull within seven (31-24) at halftime.
Late in the game,
Ike Udanoh made the first free throw and then Hollingsworth put in the offensive rebound of the missed foul shot cutting the deficit to two at 53-51.
After a Laker missed shot, Udanoh made the second of a double bonus but LSSU's Kyle Hunt hit two foul shots with 6.2 seconds left giving the hosts a 55-52 lead.
Dale Brundidge was fouled but only sank the second foul shot. Hollingsworth fouled Hunt with 2.7 seconds left. Hunt missed both free throws and Udanoh's shot from Laker foul line went off the rim.
