Amelia Davis and Tyler Hardy Post-Game Interview
Detroit – The Wayne State women's basketball team's winning streak came to an abrupt end Thursday night as Hillsdale defeated WSU
79-66 at the Matthaei. The Warriors record falls to 6-16 overall and 4-13 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The win improved the Chargers' record to 10-11 overall and 10-7 in the GLIAC.
Freshman guard
Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) came off the bench to lead four Warriors in double figures with a season-high 16 points. Hardy also tallied two assists and two steals. Also setting a season-best in scoring was freshman guard
Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford), who scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Senior guard
Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) also scored 11 points to move into 12th place in career points at Wayne State. Despite being in foul trouble for the majority of the game, freshman forward
Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) managed to chip in 10 points and seven rebounds.
As has been the case the past three games, freshman forward
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) continued to give WSU a rebounding force off the bench, finishing with a game-high eight rebounds to go with seven points.
WSU shot 40.7 percent (24-for-59) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-for-14) from three-point range, but were out-gunned by Hillsdale's 47.4 percent (27-57) from the field and 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from behind the arc. Hillsdale also held advantages in rebounds (40-32), assists (14-10) and steals (13-7). HC scored 23 points off of 20 Wayne State turnovers. Wayne State did hold the edge in bench scoring (27-15) and second-chance points (12-6).
Wayne State never seemed to find its comfort zone to begin the game, as the Warriors turned the ball over five times and shot just 1-for-5 from the field and found themselves trailing HC 12-4 through the game's first media timeout. Hillsdale would extend its lead to a first-half high 14 points (22-8) before WSU sprung out on a 15-4 run that was sparked by five points from Hardy to trim the Charger lead to just three points (26-23) at the eight minute mark.
However, Hillsdale kept the Warriors at bay and ended the half by outscoring Wayne State 16-10 to take a 42-33 lead into intermission. WSU had no answer for Chelsea Harrison who scored 18 points in the first half.
A 14-6 Hillsdale run to open up the second half gave the Chargers a commanding 56-39 lead. HC's lead would not sink below 10 points for the remainder of the game and would grow to as many as 22 points (72-50) with five minutes left in the second period. But Wayne State did not go away, managing to outscore Hillsdale 16-7 through the final five minutes of the game thanks in part to five more points by Hardy and two free throws from freshman forward
Deanna Crumpton.
Harrison went 8-for-14 from the floor and scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Chargers to their first win in three games.
Wayne State returns to action on Saturday to host Findlay at 1:00 p.m. The game will be part of the WBCA's “Pink Zone” week, an annual campaign that helps raise breast cancer awareness.
