* GAMES 23-24 STORYLINES
Wayne State suffered a 101-99 setback in the longest game in school history (three overtimes) last Saturday to the defending national champion Findlay Oilers.
WSU has lost the last four games by a combined 12 points, and has seven losses by five points or less plus a double-overtime setback this year.
WSU is tied-for-seventh in the GLIAC with Northwood and Ashland with four games left.
* HILLSDALE RECAP
After battling back from a 10-point deficit (60-50) with just over five minutes left, the Warriors tied the game with 12.6 seconds left on a pair of free throws by
Bryan Edwards. After blocking a layup attempt by Tyler Gerber in the waning seconds, Edwards was unable to control the rebound. With 1.6 seconds remaining, Gerber inbounded the ball and Brent Eaton hit a triple from the left corner for the win.
The Warriors raced out to a 7-0 advantage on a triple by
Larry Edwards along with a jumpers from
Bryan Smothers and
Ike Udanoh.
WSU had an eight-point lead (15-7) following a layup by
Jerry Oden near the mid-point of the first half. A 12-2 run by Hillsdale put the visitors in front 19-17 with 5:38 left. An offensive rebound and layup by
Larry Edwards tied the game at 19. The score would again be tied at 21 before four straight WSU foul shots preceded a layup by HC's Brad Guinane.
Bryan Wright, who went scoreless in the first half, recorded 23 points in the final 20 minutes. He was 8-of-10 from the floor including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in the second half.
* FINDLAY RECAP
WSU scored first on a jumper by
Jerry Oden. The Oilers grabbed their only lead of the first 48:50 on a triple by Marcus Parker. Wayne State tallied the next seven points on a triple by Smothers, a fastbreak layup by Wright and a pair of free throws by Oden.
An 11-3 Warrior run over the next three minutes gave WSU its largest lead of the game (24) at 43-19 with just over two minutes left in the first half.
Nathan Hyde scored the game's final points on a jumper with just over 60 seconds remaining. Smothers missed a triple try but after a shot clock violation by Findlay, WSU was unable to get a potential game-tying shot off.
Six Warriors scored in double figures led by Smothers with 25.
* ON THE BENCH
David Greer, just the ninth head coach in school history, is in his ninth season at WSU with a record of 123-120. He is the fifth-longest tenured coach in 92 seasons of WSU basketball.
Ashland's John Ellenwood has compiled a 12-11 mark in his first year with the Eagles.
Tiffin's John Hill has a 2-21 record in his first season with the Dragons.
* SCOUTING ASHLAND
The Eagles have won two straight and three of their last four games. AU is 2-7 on the road in the GLIAC.
Kale Richardson and Bylynn Hatcher (12.9 points per game) are tied for the team scoring lead with 296 points.
Richardson has made a team-high 34 triples, while Hatcher has made 89 free throws.
Richardson also leads AU in rebounds (153) and blocked shots (19).
Darius Brents leads in both assists (101) and steals (27).
Hatcher scored 14 points and dished out six assists in last Saturday's 83-64 win over Lake Superior.
* SCOUTING TIFFIN
The Dragons enter Thursday's home game with Northwood after splitting at home last weekend (def. LSSU 89-83; lost to SVSU 69-55). TU is 0-10 on the road in the GLIAC.
DeAngelo Jordan has led TU in scoring in six of the last eight contests.
Jordan (13.5 ppg) and Keenan Barlow (10.1) are the only two players averaging in double figures. Jordan leads the squad in field goals attempted (273) with Barlow ranking second (186).
Brian Scott leads TU with 45 triples, while Barlow has 43.
Rafael Cuellar is first in rebounding (122), while Scott leads in assists (50), and Jordan in steals (26).
