Women's Basketball Falls 60-47 At Grand Valley

Allendale, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-18 overall, 6-15 GLIAC) suffered a 60-47 setback at Grand Valley State University (18-8 overall, 15-6 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

After Laker Jasmine Padin hit a three-pointer on the game's opening possession, the Warriors rattled off eight consecutive points on a fastbreak layup by freshman Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern), a triple by senior Brooke Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Jefferson) and a three-pointer by freshman Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem).  The WSU defense held GVSU without a point for just over four minutes.

The hosts knotted the game at eight prior to freshman Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) hitting a jumper from the paint, and classmate Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) splitting a pair from the charity stripe.

A jumper by rookie Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich. / Bedford) at the 11:24 mark gave the Warriors a three-point advantage at 13-10, while a jumper by sophomore Kiara Smith (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) following a Laker bucket regained the three-point lead.

A 7-0 GVSU run over the next three minutes was ended by back-to-back buckets from Chelsea Davis, the second of which tied the game at 19.

Following a Smith layup at the 5:27 mark which pulled the Warriors within two at 23-21, Grand Valley responded with a 5-0 run.

Wayne State answered with an 8-2 run highlighted by four consecutive points from Hardy.  Hardy then finished the half with a jumper cutting the WSU deficit to one, 35-34, at intermission.

Bowers had eight points at halftime to lead WSU, who had 10 turnovers to only five for the Lakers.

Grand Valley scored the first five points of the second half until a layup by Colbert at the 15:06 mark pulled the Warriors within four at 40-36.

A triple by freshman Paige Sickmiller (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) at the 12:30 mark cut the deficit to three (44-41) but WSU would not get any closer as the Warriors did not make a field goal in the final 8:50 following Crumpton's three-pointer which made it a six-point contest at 51-45.

WSU was 0-for-7 from the floor with five turnovers during the scoreless drought.

Chelsea Davis led Wayne State with nine points and eight rebounds, while Colbert contributed six points and seven boards.

WSU shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the floor compared to 38.3 percent (23-of-60) for Grand Valley.

Alex Stelfox scored a game-high 17 points for the Lakers with Emma Veach recording a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists.

Wayne State will conclude its 2009-10 campaign with a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday at Ferris State.
