Women’s Tennis Defeats Saint Michael's College 8-1

Orlando, Fla. – The Wayne State women's tennis team earned its second win in two days on Sunday by defeating Saint Michael's College 8-1. The victory comes 24 hours after WSU came away victorious over Birmingham-Southern 8-1 to begin the spring portion of its schedule. The wins give Wayne State a record of 10-5 overall.

WSU started the match by gaining two points in doubles play. The Warriors' new No. 1 pairing of Sharon Gill (Windsor, Ont./Academie Ste. Cecile) and Kristina Goranskaya (Thornhill, Ont./Northview Heights Secondary School) bested the Saint Michael's duo of Deahna Giguere and Lindsay Horne 8-2.

After Wayne State's McCall Monte (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Gross Pointe South) and Milena Vuksanovic (Pancevo, Serbia/Uros Predic Secondary School) lost their doubles match 9-7, Meghan Luzod (Royal Oak, Mich./Dondero) and Medha Jha (Troy, Mich./Athens) won a close 8-6 match over SMC's Alexandra Dalton and Jean-Marie McGrath.

Wayne State controlled its singles matches with relative ease as each of WSU's six wins were straight-set victories with 11 of the 12 sets being decided by three or more points.

Gill and Goranskaya earned 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-2 wins in first in second singles play while Vuksanovic and Monte were winners in the third and fourth flights 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-4.

Jennifer Bradford (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) also received a win on Sunday after a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Emily Magee. Debora Correa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Padre Eustaquio) came away with a 6-3, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles to cap off Wayne State's near-perfect performance.

After its morning win over Saint Michalel's, WSU started an afternoon match with Shorter College, the 18th ranked team in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. The two schools played their singles matches first and split the bouts 3-3. Gill, Bradford and Monte all posted victories for WSU. However, doubles play was not able to be completed due to time restraints. The doubles matches are currently trying to be rescheduled.

Wayne State is off on Sunday before beginning the final leg of its Florida trip on Monday against Saint Thomas Aquinas.
