Women's Basketball Drops Contest At Hillsdale, 72-61

Trailing by one at halftime, the Warriors get outscored 39-29 in the final 20 minutes

Jan. 13, 2010

Hillsdale, Mich. – Trailing by one at halftime, the Wayne State women's basketball team (3-10, 3-4 GLIAC) was outscored 39-29 in the second half to lose at Hillsdale (10-3, 5-3 GLIAC), 72-61, on Thursday night.

After missing Saturday's game versus Findlay with an injury, Tyler Hardy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) came back to lead the Warriors with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. It was her 11th double-digit game of the season.

Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and Alison Bouman (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) both tallied career-high point totals with 11 and 10, respectively. Bouman also collected a career-high eight rebounds.

Despite shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half, WSU went into halftime down one.

Offensively in the second half, the Warriors' hot hands went cold as they shot 33.3 percent.

Hillsdale used a 10-3 run in the first five minutes to take a 43-35 advantage. The next five minutes saw more of the same from the Chargers as they put together a 13-5 run to lead 56-40 with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The Warriors would not go lightly, putting together an 11-4 spurt to trail 60-51 with 4:40 left. Unfortunately, WSU would go scoreless over the next 2:45, letting the Chargers pull away.

Down 4-2 out of the gate, Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich./Romeo) drilled a three-point basket to catapult a 15-6 run that spanned four minutes, 19 seconds, giving the visitors a 17-10 lead with 13:21 remaining in the first half.

Hillsdale responded, scoring the contests next eight points.

From there, the teams traded buckets, and with the Chargers clinging to a 26-25 lead with 6:04 left, HC went on an 8-1 run, taking a 33-27 lead with 1:44 left before halftime. However, a triple from Davis, followed by a lay-up from Bouman allowed the Warriors to bridge the gap heading into break.

Wayne State heads to Findlay (10-3, 6-1 GLIAC) on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off.

Notes

* WSU out-rebounded HC 40-39.
* Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) grabbed a season-high nine rebounds.
