DETROIT -- The 25th-ranked Wayne State University men's basketball team (12-3 overall, 8-1 GLIAC) is tied for first in the GLIAC South Division with sixth-ranked Findlay following the Warriors
102-72 home court triumph over Tiffin University (3-14 overall, 1-9 GLIAC) Thursday evening.
The contest was tied three times in the first 4:15 before the visiting Dragons took their largest lead of the game (14-11) at the 15:32 mark following a conventional three-point play by Travis Spahr, who led TU with 17 points.
The Warriors responded with an 11-0 run as Tiffin was held scoreless for over four minutes. Four different WSU players scored during the spurt.
The squads traded baskets until sophomore guard
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.), who led all scorers with 22 points, drained a triple just past the halfway point of the first half off a feed from junior
Dale Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) to put WSU ahead 29-18.
The lead remained between nine and 12 until a fast-break lay-up by senior guard
Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) gave the Warriors a 14-point advantage (38-24) with just under six minutes remaining.
Wayne State garnered its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at the 2:12 mark following a triple by Smothers, which gave the hosts a 49-30 lead.
The Warriors had a 50-34 intermission lead as both teams shot well in the first half -- WSU 61 percent (20-of-33) and TU 56 percent (15-of-27). A key difference was turnovers with Wayne State committing three miscues compared to 12 for Tiffin.
The Dragons pulled within 15 following a Joe Graessle triple 75 seconds into the second half, but WSU answered with four straight points on a pair of Hollingsworth free throws and a lay-up by senior forward
Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) off a dish by Hollingsworth.
Leading by 15 (58-43), Wayne State scored the next six points - three each by freshman
Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) and sophomore
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) for a 21-point advantage.
WSU's lead remained between 16 and 21 for the next eight minutes until Tiffin's Brian Scott made a three-pointer cutting the Warrior lead to 15 (77-62) with 6:23 remaining.
The Dragons followed with a 5-1 run to make it an 11-point game (78-67) with 4:54 left, but WSU closed out the contest on a 24-5 run as TU only made two field goals the rest of the contest.
In addition to Hollingsworth's game-high 22 points, four other Warriors scored in double figures - Oden and Larkin with 16 each, Coleman with 12 and senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Harper Woods Notre Dame) added 10 points. Larkin also tied for game-high honors with nine rebounds along with Tiffin's Spahr.
WSU finished with seven turnovers, while turning 19 Dragon errors into 28 points off turnovers. Another key statistic was points in the paint where Wayne State held a 60-36 advantage.
The Warriors begin a three-game road trip on Saturday at Ohio Dominican. Tip-off in Columbus, Ohio, is slated for a 1 p.m.
