DETROIT -- Despite a 9-2 start with only losses at former No. 1-ranked Bellarmine and Gannon heading into today's match-up, the Wayne State University men's basketball team did not receive any votes in last week's NABC national poll.
After Saturday's
91-68 triumph over top-ranked Findlay (12-1 overall, 5-1 GLIAC), the Warriors (10-2 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) should garner some national recognition.
WSU started the contest on an 8-0 run as the visiting Oilers had turnovers on their first three possessions followed by a missed jumper. Senior forward
Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) scored the final four points of the opening spurt.
UF cut the deficit to seven (12-5) on a triple by Nathan Hyde, but the Warriors answered with a 9-0 run. Oden and sophomore guard
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) each scored from inside, freshman guard
Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) drained a triple and senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) concluded the spree with a lay-up giving WSU a 21-5 advantage.
Wayne State's lead remained between 13 and 18, until an Oden jumper at the 11:27 mark made it a 30-10 contest. The teams traded buckets until a Hollingsworth jumper increased the lead to 24 (47-23) with 2:29 left before intermission.
Findlay ended the first half on a 10-4 run to cut the Warrior lead to 18 at the break.
The Warriors shot 62 percent (23-of-37) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while limiting Findlay to six made field goals (on 15 attempts for 40 percent). Each team made three triples, but the Oilers went to the foul line 21 times as WSU was whistled for 15 fouls.
UF's Jack Smith made a pair of free throws at the 18:58 mark to pull the Oilers within 16 at 51-35. Hollingsworth tallied the next three points of the game pushing the lead to 19.
Wayne State's lead remained between 16 and 21 for the next nine minutes until Hollingsworth had an offensive rebound and put-back increasing the WSU margin to 22. After Hyde missed a triple try, Udanoh scored from inside at the 8:51 mark giving the hosts a 73-49 lead.
WSU's margin was never less than 22 the rest of the contest.
The Warriors shot 61 percent (17-of-28) from the floor in the second half, while limiting the Oilers to 45 percent (13-of-29). Each team made two shots from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes, and each squad attempted eight free throws.
UF entered the week ranked fourth in the GLIAC in scoring defense (66.5 points) and allowed more than 91 points for the first time since winning in Detroit last February (101-99) in triple overtime. It was Findlay's largest setback since a 91-66 loss at Gannon on Feb. 8, 2001.
Hollingsworth scored a game-high 24 points on 11-of-16 from the floor. Senior guard
Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) tallied 19 points and a game-best eight assists, while Oden and sophomore forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) each contributed 12 points. Lakrin grabbed a game-best six rebounds.
Kyle Caiola led UF with 19 points, while Hyde added 17.
WSU made 40 field goal attempts in the game, while holding Findlay to 44 attempts. The Warriors finished the game at 62 percent (40-of-65) from the floor, with the Oilers shooting just below their average at 43 percent (19-of-44).
Wayne State has a tough stretch next week visiting Hillsdale College on Thursday along with a re-match at Findlay on Saturday.
