GAMES 5 & 6 STORYLINES
After winning three of its four non-conference games to start the season, Wayne State will open GLIAC play on the road this week, taking on Lake Erie on Thursday and Ashland on Saturday.
The Warriors are coming off a pair of victories at the Drury Classic last week. The Storm has a three-game winning streak, including a 67-51 win Sunday against Mercyhurst. The Eagles defeated Point Park, 108-95, last Wednesday.
ALL-TIME SERIES
WSU holds a 26-19 lead over the Eagles in a series that began on Jan. 27, 1922. The Warriors have won two of their last three games at Kates Gymnasium.
Wayne State won both meetings with Lake Erie last year, the Storm's first season in the GLIAC.
DRURY CLASSIC RECAP
Wayne State outscored Northeastern State, 16-2, in overtime to record an 87-73 victory over the RiverHawks last Friday.
An eight-point WSU lead evaporated late in regulation, but the Warriors held NSU scoreless in the final 4:18 of the extra frame.
Redshirt senior
Ike Udanoh posted his second straight double-double scoring a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while tallying a game-high 11 rebounds.
Wayne State had solid contributions from junior guards
Mike Hollingsworth and
Cole Prophet. Hollingsworth totaled 19 points and six boards, while Prophet chipped in 14 points.
Senior guard
Dale Brundidge sparked the Warriors in posting the first five points of overtime.
Udanoh scored 15 points and colected a career-high 15 rebounds the next night as Wayne State defeated Drury, 61-51. He was named to the All-Tournament Team along with Prophet, who had 10 points, three rebounds and two steals against the Panthers.
Hollingsworth contributed a team-high 16 points.
Defensive play was critical to the win also, as Wayne State scored 19 points off of 14 Drury turnovers and recorded a season-high 11 steals.
ON THE BENCH
David Greer, just the ninth head coach in 94 years of WSU basketball, is in his 11th season at WSU with a 152-130 record.
He is the fifth-longest tenured coach at WSU. The 22 victories by the Warriors in 2010-11 were the most under Greer and the highest total since the 1998-99 NCAA qualifying squad compiled a 25-5 record.
Wayne State's 14 GLIAC wins last year are the most since the same 1998-99 team took first place in the conference with a 16-3 mark.
Seventh-year head coach Cliff Hunt is 93-74 during his tenure at Lake Erie. John Ellenwood is 28-30 in his third year at Ashland.
SCOUTING LAKE ERIE
After starting the season with a loss to Division I Detroit Mercy, Lake Erie is 3-0 against NCAA Division II teams.
Senior guard Brandon Smith, who is averaging 10.3 points per game this season, tied for game-high honors with 14 points Sunday against Mercyhurst. Redshirt freshman guard Jamil Dudley had a career-high 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half including three three-pointers.
Sophomore center Rich Austin leads the Storm on the season in both scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg). He ranks 13th and sixth in those categories, respectively, in the conference.
SCOUTING ASHLAND
The Eagles bounced back from losses to Central State and Lourdes in the Red Roof Roundball Classic at Ohio Dominican with a 108-95 win over Point Park last Wednesday. Saturday's meeting with Wayne State comes at the midpoint of a five-game homestand for Ashland, as Hillsdale comes to town on Thursday.
Junior forward Evan Yates led AU with 18 rebounds and 31 points last Wednesday, the most points by an AU player in four years. Yates is averaging 21.7 points and 17.3 rebounds, leading the GLIAC in both categories, and is shooting 63.9 percent from the field.
Junior guard Ronnie Steward, who had 24 points and made five three-pointers last Wednesday, ranks fifth in the GLIAC in three-point percentage (55.0).
