Wayne State began this three-game homestand with a 79-43 victory over Saginaw Valley State last Thursday. ODU and Tiffin have each lost five straight, including four in a row against common GLIAC North Division foes over the last two weeks.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Wayne State has never lost to either of this week's opponents, leading the all-time series with Ohio Dominican, 2-0, and with Tiffin, 10-0. The Warriors swept the Panthers last season, ODU's first year in the GLIAC. The series between WSU and Tiffin dates back to 1986.
SAGINAW VALLEY STATE RECAP
Ian Larkin scored a career-high 21 points in last Thursday's win over the Cardinals. His first-half numbers alone would have sufficed for an entire game to many collegiate players.
Larkin had 15 points in the first 20 minutes of play, shooing 6-for-8 from the field, with four blocks and three rebounds. He finished the game 9-for-12 with six blocks and seven boards.
The Warriors shot 65.3 percent from the field, compared to 27.1 percent for the Cardinals, who had their winning streak halted at three games. Thursday's game also marked the fewest points surrendered by WSU to a conference opponent since 2002.
Wayne State led for the entire game after Larkin scored the first bucket 40 seconds into the contest. He accounted for the first six points of a 13-0 run in the first 5:47. SVSU cut deficit to 25-23 before WSU closed out the half on a 13-3 run.
Cole Prophet and
Ike Udanoh had eight points apiece in the second half, during which Wayne State outscored SVSU, 41-17.
Udanoh posted his fifth double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a career-high five steals.
Stacey Waters finished with 14 points while contributing five rebounds and five assists.
Gerald Williams-Taylor tied his season-high with 11 points off the bench along with six boards, while Prophet chipped in 10 points and four assists.
ON THE BENCH
David Greer, just the ninth head coach in 94 years of WSU basketball, is in his 11th season at WSU with a 155-130 record.
He is the fifth-longest tenured coach at WSU. The 22 victories by the Warriors in 2010-11 were the most since the 1998-99 NCAA qualifying squad compiled a 25-5 record.
Wayne State's 14 GLIAC wins last year are the most since the same 1998-99 team took first place with a 16-3 mark.
Fifth-year head coach Artie Taylor is 52-67 at Ohio Dominican. John Hill, who has a record of 14-49 in his third season at Tiffin, won a school-record 357 games during his 27-year tenure at Heidelberg (1975-2002). He was the athletic director at Shenandoah from 2002-09.
SCOUTING OHIO DOMINICAN
The Panthers' offense struggled last weekend in road losses to Michigan Tech (74-36) and Northern Michigan (81-69), as they shot just 36.0 percent (41-of-114) from the field and 2-of-28 (7.1 percent) from three-point range. ODU's 56.9 points per game this season is the lowest in the conference.
Junior guard Morgan Jones leads the GLIAC in steals (2.9 spg) and is ODU's leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points per game.
Senior forward Aaron Gibbs, who averaged 12.5 points over the two games last week, is the ninth-leading rebounder in the league (7.1 rpg).
Freshman forward Bobby Stauffer came off the bench to average 12.5 points on 9-of-12 shooting and 5.5 rebounds in 21 minutes of action last week. He also hit 7-of-8 free throws.
SCOUTING TIFFIN
The Dragons opened conference play with home losses to Ferris State and Grand Valley State two weeks ago, and road setbacks at Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech last week.
Senior guard Karl Finley has the second-highest scoring average (17.3 ppg) in the conference. He has a GLIAC-best 173 points over TU's 10 games.
Sophomore guard Joe Graessle led the Dragons with 23 points against the Huskies. He has hit at least one three-pointer in every game of his career (36 games) and leads the GLIAC with 30 three-pointers made this season.
The league's leader in field goal percentage is senior center Brandon Harris (63.8), who also ranks third in blocked shots (2.0 bpg).
