Kenosha, Wis. -- The eight-game winning streak for the Wayne State University men's basketball squad (8-2 overall) came to an end Thursday night with a
62-52 setback at Wisconsin-Parkside (6-3 overall).
The game started promising for the Warrior defense as it held the host Rangers to one made field goal in the first four minutes. However, the WSU offense could only muster buckets by seniors
Dale Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower).
Another Udanoh hoop cut the UWP lead to 7-6, but the hosts tallied the next eight points until senior
Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) scored on a drive down the lane, ending a Warrior scoreless drought of nearly 4:30. Wayne State was 0-for-8 from the floor, had three turnovers and missed two foul shots during the pointless stretch.
WSU trailed 19-10 midway through the first half, then outscored UWP 10-9 over the next four minutes. In the final 5:30 before intermission, the Warriors made just two field goals and were outscored 12-5 giving the Rangers the largest lead of the game at 40-25 at halftime.
Wayne State shot 31 percent (10-of-32) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while Wisconsin-Parkside connected on 52 percent (14-of-27) of its shots. WSU attempts five more field goals but made four less. The Rangers also were deadly from the foul line making 10-of-11 compared to Wayne State's 4-of-9.
The trademark Warrior defense was on display for most of the second half as WSU attempted to make a comeback for its fourth win in the last five meetings against UWP. Wayne State only allowed one made field goal in the first 8:40 after intermission, while junior
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) scored seven consecutive points in a span of three minutes to cut a 14-point deficit in half. Junior
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) hit a jumper to conclude the 9-0 Warrior run.
A lay-up by Ranger Ziggy Riauka with 8:22 left gave the hosts a nine-point advantage at 51-42. Waters keyed a 7-0 WSU streak by scoring four consecutive points. Sophomore
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) split a pair from the charity stripe and Prophet scored after driving down the lane to make it a two-point game (51-49) with 4:24 left. The Warriors had another apparent bucket about 30 seconds before Williams-Taylor went to the line, but an "interesting" offensive goaltending call on Udanoh did not make it a three-point game.
UWP scored the next three points from the foul line, all by Jeremy Saffold, as WSU had a turnover between Ranger possessions. Larkin made two free throws with 1:52 remaining and Saffold missed both foul shots. Prophet split a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 54-52 contest with 1:16 left, but it would be the final points for the Warriors.
Saffold then made two foul shots and Saffold scored on a fast-break lay-up following a Warrior turnover.
Wisconsin-Parkside managed just four made field goals in the first 19 minutes of the second half and finished at 21 percent (5-of-24) during the final 20 minutes.
Udanoh recorded his sixth double-double of the campaign with a team-high 17 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Waters had 11 points before fouling out. Saffold tallied a game-high 18 points.
Both teams had 38 rebounds but the Warriors managed just nine second-chance points on 15 offensive rebounds.
UWP had a strong game from the foul line making 21-of-26 (81 percent) compared to 68 percent (15-of-22) for WSU.
Wayne State will conclude the 2011 portion of its schedule with a Saturday afternoon contest at Lewis. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. Eastern and can be heard on NewsTalk 1400 (WDTK) or online at wdtkam.com.
