GAMES 7 & 8 STORYLINES
The Wayne State women's basketball team will look to bounce back from a pair of road losses last week, as the Warriors host Saginaw Valley State on Thursday night before traveling to St. Joseph's (Ind.) for a non-conference matchup Saturday.
Wayne State dropped its first two GLIAC games of the season, 81-71 at Lake Erie and 74-66 at Ashland. After winning their conference opener Thursday against Lake Superior State, 73-58, the Cardinals lost a 62-55 result Monday vs. Madonna. The Pumas rebounded from a 106-101 triple-overtime loss to Northern Kentucky on Thursday with a dramatic 73-71 win over Bellarmine on Saturday.
ALL-TIME SERIES
WSU trails SVSU, 34-26, in the all-time series dating back to the 1975-76 season. The Cardinals defeated the Warriors, 61-55, last December at University Center to snap a four-game skid against WSU. Wayne State has won 10 of the last 15 meetings.
Wayne State and St. Joseph's, who will play a home-and-home series this month, had not met since 1984 prior to last December's 67-64 win for the Pumas in Detroit.
LAKE ERIE RECAP
Wayne State shot 44 percent from the field Thursday at Lake Erie but finished just 2-for-13 from three-point range in an 81-71 loss to the Storm.
Phaebre Colbert tallied a team-high 17 points off the bench to lead four Warriors in double figures. She also recorded her first double-double of the season by adding 10 rebounds.
Paige Sickmiller contributed 12 points while
Deanna Crumpton had her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Stefani Munro added 10 points and a team-best seven assists.
ASHLAND RECAP
Tied at 53-53 with 8:25 left, the Eagles made a 10-point run to try and pull away. The Warriors rallied, closing to within five (69-64) with 2:38 to go, but Ashland scored its final five points from the line to preserve the 74-66 win.
Juanita Cochran led WSU with 23 points and 14 rebounds while Sickmiller chipped in with 14 points and Munro finished with 13 points and seven assists.
ON THE BENCH
Carrie Lohr is 4-2 as the head mentor of the women's basketball program. She was named the 12th head coach in program history on May 11 after serving as the head coach at St. Clair County Community College (SC4) in Port Huron for nine seasons (2002-11). Lohr had a record of 166-106 (.610) in her nine years with the Skippers.
Jamie Pewinski is in her first season at Saginaw Valley State after serving five years as the head coach at Lake Superior State, where she had a record of 77-61.
SJC's Brandon Turner is in his fourth season at his alma mater with a record of 21-68.
SCOUTING SAGINAW VALLEY STATE
Last Thursday's 73-58 victory over LSSU was the Cardinals' first win to open GLIAC play since they defeated Wayne State, 89-77, in 2004. Junior guard Jasmine Woods, who scored 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting against the Lakers, is SVSU's leading scorer this season averaging 11.5 points per game. She is also a 96 percent shooter from the free throw line.
While SVSU is averaging just 59.5 points per game, lowest in the conference, the Cardinals have out-rebounded their opponents in all six games this season. They are also shooting 74.4 percent from the charity stripe.
SCOUTING ST. JOSEPH'S
Senior guard Montrell Mills' layup with four seconds left gave the Pumas a 73-71 win over Bellarmine last Saturday. She led SJC with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in the game after contributing 22 points and five assists in the triple-OT loss to Northern Kentucky two days prior.
Mills came into this week as the Great Lakes Valley Conference's leading scorer, averaging 18.1 points per game. SJC's top rebounder is senior guard Britney Cruse (4.6 rpg).
St. Joseph's has the fourth-highest scoring average (71.9 ppg) in the GLVC, and the best turnover margin (+7.4).
