DETROIT - Junior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) scored a career-high 21 points as the Wayne State University men's basketball team (6-1, 3-0 GLIAC) extended its winning streak to six games following a
79-43 victory over Saginaw Valley State (4-4, 1-1 GLIAC) on Thursday night at the Matthaei.
Larkin's first-half numbers alone would have sufficed for an entire game to many collegiate players. He had 15 points in the first 20 minutes of play, shooing 6-for-8 from the field, with four blocks and three rebounds. He finished the game 9-for-12 with six blocks and seven boards.
The Warriors shot 65.3 percent from the field, compared to 27.1 percent for the Cardinals, who had their winning streak halted at three games. Thursday's game also marked the fewest points surrendered by WSU to a conference opponent since Jan. 14, 2002, a 75-42 win at Northern Michigan.
Wayne State led for the entire game after Larkin scored the first bucket of the night 40 seconds into the contest. He accounted for the first six points of a 13-0 run in the first 5:47.
SVSU cut deficit to 25-23 before WSU closed out half on 13-3 run, with Larkin contributing seven points in that stretch.
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) and
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) had eight points apiece in the second half as Wayne State outscored SVSU, 41-17, in the final 20 minutes.
Udanoh posted his fifth double-double of the year with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a career-high five steals.
Larkin and Udanoh were among five Warriors scoring in double-figures.
Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) finished with 14 points while contributing five rebounds and five assists.
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) tied his season-high with 11 points off the bench along with six boards, while Prophet chipped in 10 points and four assists.
Wayne State will host Ohio Dominican next Thursday (Dec. 15) and Tiffin (Dec. 17) next Saturday at the Matthaei.
