DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (5-2, 1-2 GLIAC) picked up its first conference victory of the season, a 59-52 result against Saginaw Valley State University (2-5, 1-1 GLIAC) on Thursday night at the Matthaei.

Senior Stefani Munro (Harrison Twp., Mich./Mt. Clemens) led the Warriors with a season-high 15 points, making several critical baskets late in the game.  She was 6-for-12 from the field and chipped in four assists.

After leading by as many as 15 points in the first half, the Warriors found themselves down by five midway through the second half.  Wayne State fought back, however, to defeat SVSU for the fifth time in the last six meetings.

Supporting Munro in the effort were juniors Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich.) and Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood), who finished with eight points and eight rebounds apiece.  Sophomore Chloe Srebernak (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) had her best game as a Warrior, contributing nine points and eight boards off the bench.

A jumper by Grace Herzog gave the Cardinals an 8-4 lead early in the game, but back-to-back buckets by Munro jumpstarted a 16-point run for the Warriors, who led 32-18 at halftime.

SVSU went on a 20-4 run to open the second half, coming all the way back to take a 38-36 lead with 11:17 to play.

Down 43-39 moments later, Wayne State scored 10 straight points to pull ahead by six with 4:51 left.  SVSU closed to within one but the Warriors held on, as Munro scored the final five points of the contest.

Herzog finished with a team-high 10 points for the Cardinals.

Wayne State will travel to St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Saturday for a 2:00 tipoff.
