Midland, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (7-15 overall, 6-9 GLIAC) battled host Northwood University (12-9 overall, 8-7 GLIAC) even for the first 27:30 of the contest, but the Timberwolves ended the game on a 23-6 run to post a
64-47 win over the Warriors.
There were eight lead changes and four tied scores in the opening 20 minutes with WSU holding its largest lead (9-6) following a jumper by sophomore
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) at the 15:51 mark.
Wayne State again held the lead at 11-10 and 13-12, before an 11-6 run by Northwood gave the hosts its largest lead before intermission (24-18).
The Warriors shot just 32 percent (8-of-25) in the first half, but trailed only 26-23. Colbert and freshman post player
Alison Bouman (Grandville, Mich. / Calvin Christian) each had six points in the opening 20 minutes.
WSU took its first lead of the second half, at 32-31, following a conventional three-point play by sophomore
Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich. / Bedford).
Wayne State snapped a 36-36 tie on a triple by sophomore
Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich. / East Kentwood) at the 13:53 mark.
After a Davis lay-up knotted the game at 41 with 12:23 left, Northwood scored the next eight points until a jumper by Crumpton.
A lay-up by Bouman cut the Warrior deficit to five (50-45) with 7:43 left, but that would be WSU's last made field goal of the contest. Northwood would score the next 14 points until Crumpton concluded Wayne State's scoring with a pair of free throws.
Crumpton scored a team-high 13 points.
WSU had only one turnover in the second half but shot just 29 percent (9-of-31) in the final 20 minutes.
Pam Wilson (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Savannah Stedman (13 points, 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles for Northwood.
WSU will continue its road trip next week with contests at Ferris State (Thursday) and Grand Valley (Saturday).
