DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (17-4 overall) extended its home court winning streak to 13 games with a
95-72 non-conference triumph over Wisconsin-Parkside (8-14 overall) Monday evening at the Matthaei.
The Warriors scored on the game's opening possession as junior guard
Dale Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) drained a three-pointer. The teams then traded hoops before back-to-back hoops by sophomore guard
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) and senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) pushed the lead to five at 9-4.
The Rangers pulled within one at 9-8 after making four consecutive free throws. After UWP cut the Wayne State advantage to three (13-10), the Warriors went on 13-2 run over the next 5:30. Five different WSU players scored during the spurt.
Following an old-fashioned three-point play by UWP's Jeremy Saffold which cut the Wayne State lead to 10 (28-18) with 7:29 left, the Warriors expanded their advantage with a 19-9 run to take a 20-point lead on fast-break lay-up by senior guard
Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern).
WSU shot 56 percent (18-of-32) from the floor in the first half while limiting UWP to 39 percent (11-of-28). Both teams made two triples, and both squads attempted 12 foul shots in the opening 20 minutes. UWP made eight from the charity stripe compared to 11 for WSU.
Wayne State tallied the first three points of the second half expanding its lead to 20 (52-32) at the 18:47 mark. The Rangers pulled within 14 on three different occasions, but a 19-5 Warrior run from the 11:20 mark until the 6:00 mark sealed the win.
WSU shot 69 percent (18-of-26) from the field in the second half, but UWP was able to shot 50 percent (15-of-30) including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc (46 percent).
Wayne State held a 37-23 advantage on the boards.
Smothers recorded a game-high 25 points, while Saffold led the Rangers with 21 points. Hollingsworth and senior forward
Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) each tallied 15 points, with Udanoh grabbing a game-best eight rebounds.
Wayne State will begin a three-game road trip this Saturday with a 4 p.m. tip-off at Northwood.
