Smothers scores 25 in final collegiate game.

Louisville, Ky. – The 25th-ranked Wayne State University men's basketball team (22-8 overall) had its 2010-11 season come to an end with a 90-88 setback to No. 27-Ferris State University (23-7 overall) in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional at Bellarmine University.

Trailing by 10 (79-69) with 2:56 remaining, the Warriors made a valiant attempt to come back from the game's largest deficit. With both teams already in the double bonus, WSU senior guard Bryan Smothers (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) made two free throws, but Bulldog Justin Keenan, the 2010-11 Daktronics Midwest Region Player of the Year, made the first of two foul shots.

Senior center Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) made both attempts from the charity stripe and after Keenan missed a lay-up, junior guard Dale Brundidge (Southfield, Mich./Detroit Country Day) made the second of his two free throws cutting the Warrior deficit to six.

Following a turnover by each squad, FSU's Kenny Brown, who came off the bench to score 27 points, converted both of his foul shot attempts. After a missed triple try by WSU, Bulldog Lou Williams split a pair putting the Warriors down nine (83-74) with just 77 seconds left.

After a lay-up by Smothers, Ferris' Darien Gay made the second of two from the foul line. Udanoh scored down low off a feed from Smothers, but Gay sank to free throws with 47 seconds left giving the Bulldogs an 86-78 advantage.

Freshman Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) drained a triple try from the corner pulling WSU within five. After Keenan made both foul shots, Smothers hit a triple cutting the Warrior deficit to four (88-84) with 26 seconds remaining.

Udanoh's bucket answered a pair of Gay free throws to keep the margin at four. After an offensive foul on Keenan, Udanoh scored again making it a two-point game with five seconds left.

Keenan was fouled on the inbounds, but missed both attempts from the charity stripe with Udanoh grabbing the rebound but the clock expired before he could get a shot off.

Wayne State began the game on a 9-2 run in the first 4:45 with senior forward Jerry Oden (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech) scoring WSU's first four points.

FSU responded with six consecutive points, and after a reverse lay-up by junior guard Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) put the Warriors ahead 13-10, the Bulldogs went on a 12-4 run to take a 22-17 lead. Sophomore guard Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) responded with a triple, and Ferris' lead remained between one and five points until an 8-2 spurt gave FSU a 38-31 lead.

Wayne State scored the final three points of the first half on a conventional three-point play by freshman forward Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern).

After Ferris State took a 45-42 lead, the Warriors went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 48-45. Following a conventional three-point play by Keenan knotted the score at 48, Brundidge and Smothers hit back-to-back three-pointers in a span of 84 seconds for a six-point WSU advantage.

Keenan tallied 10 straight points for the Bulldogs during one stretch of the second half, but Wayne State still lead by three at the mid-point of the second half. Brown hit four three-pointers in a span of 100 seconds, then added two free throws and a jumper to tally 14 straight FSU points.

With the Warriors trailing 69-62, Ferris recorded 10 of the next 17 points setting up the scoring barrage in the final three minutes.

Smothers led WSU with 25 points and five assists in his final collegiate game. He finishes his career as one of only two players to record 1,100 points, 300 assists and 300 rebounds for the Green and Gold.

Udanoh added 16 points and tied Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) for team-high rebounding honors with seven. Hollingsworth contributed 12 points with Larkin adding 10 off the bench.

Keenan tallied game-high totals of 31 points and nine rebounds, while Brown scored 27 of FSU's 29 bench points.

WSU shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the floor, while FSU made 56 percent (31-of-55). Both teams made six triples with the Warriors shooting an outstanding 83 percent (24-of-29) from the foul line compared to 67 percent (22-of-33) for the Bulldogs.

Wayne State will graduate three seniors in Oden, Smothers and Udanoh. Oden and Smothers combined for over 2,000 points in the four years with the Warriors while Udanoh played the last two seasons after spending his first two years at Long Island.
