GAMES 15 & 16 STORYLINES
Wayne State enters this week's two-game homestand with a three-game winning streak after defeating both of this week's opponents on the road last week.
ALL-TIME SERIES
WSU has won two straight vs. Hillsdale for the first time since the 2006 calendar year. The last time the Warriors won at least three consecutive games in the series was 1990-92 when the Tartars won five straight. Wayne State is 19-12 at home vs. HC.
The Warriors are 10-5 all-time at home against the Oilers. WSU had won eight straight at home until last year's 69-42 setback to UF.
HILLSDALE RECAP
WSU won its first GLIAC regular-season contest at Hillsdale since an 80-68 triumph on Jan. 30, 1995, with a 52-49 victory on Jan. 5.
WSU raced out to a 7-0 lead in the first four minutes as three different players –
Deanna Crumpton,
Phaebre Colbert and
Stefani Munro – scored buckets. After a Charger hoop,
Juanita Cochran scored down low and
Paige Sickmiller finished off a fast break giving the guests an 11-2 advantage.
Hillsdale tallied 11 of the next 15 points to pull within three at 15-13. Munro scored four of the next six points on a pair of free throws and a basket. Back-to-back triples by Sickmiller, who led all scorers at the break with 13 points, pushed WSU's lead to 25-15.
Wayne State scored the first four points of the second half to open a 14-point lead (36-22) at the 14:53 mark. Sickmiller made both ends of a one-and-one, but a Chelsea Harrison jumper made it a one-point game again at 47-46.
Amelia Davis split a pair from the foul line with 1:45 left, and Munro sealed the win by making two shots in a one-and-the-bonus with 18.9 seconds remaining. Cochran also made both ends of a one-and-one with DeMott closing out the scoring with a triple at the buzzer.
Sickmiller led all scorers with 17 points, while Munro added 11 points and seven assists. Cochran recorded a game-high 13 rebounds.
FINDLAY RECAP
WSU extended its winning streak to three games with a 75-72 overtime win at Findlay last Saturday.
With the score tied at 65 in overtime, the Warriors tallied four straight points on lay-ups by Cochran and Sickmiller. UF's Clare Aubry connected on her fourth triple of the game making it 69-68 with 2:12 left. Cochran answered down low 12 seconds later with Munro dishing her fourth assist of overtime.
After Aubry sank two free throws, Munro made two of her own with 1:29 left. Nine seconds later UF's Kayla Brown made it a one-point game again at 73-72 with two foul shots.
Each team had a turnover on its next possession before an interesting offensive charge call on Davis as she drove baseline with 20.1 seconds left. Findlay's Kayleigh Kenny missed a lay-up with Davis grabbing the rebound. Davis then calmly sank both ends of a one-and-one increasing the Warrior lead to three with 5.8 seconds left.
Sickmiller tallied a season-high 19 points in a career-high 42 minutes played as Wayne State recorded its first overtime victory since a 81-77 home court victory over Findlay on Jan. 14, 2006.
