Women's Hoops Outscored 84-70 At Tiffin

Colbert records double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.


Tiffin, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (9-8 overall, 4-6 GLIAC) suffered its third consecutive setback with an 84-70 loss at Tiffin University (13-4 overall, 8-3 GLIAC) Thursday evening.
 
After the Dragons scored on their first possession, the Warriors scored the next four points on buckets by junior center Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) and junior forward Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) to take its only lead of the game at 4-2.
 
Tiffin's Mandy Jaeb then scored the next five points giving the hosts a 7-4 advantage.  Following a Colbert lay-up on the fast break, the Dragons tallied the next five points for an 11-6 lead.
 
Freshman forward Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) scored the next four WSU points cutting the deficit to 13-10.  Junior forward Deanna Crumpton (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) scored nine of Wayne State's next 11 points, including her first three pointer of the campaign, but the Warriors still trailed 27-21 with 5:40 remaining as Tiffin's Karli Mast was in the midst of making four consecutive triples in a span of 2:26.  Her last three-point field goal put the Dragons ahead 33-21 with just under five minutes left.  It was TU's biggest lead of the first half (also led by 12 at 39-27, 41-29 and 44-32).
 
Each team scored 11 points in the final 4:30 of the opening 20 minutes.
 
Tiffin began the second half on a 12-2 run to open a 20-point lead at 56-36 with 16:24 left.  The Warriors responded with their own 12-2 run to close the deficit to 10 (58-48).  Cochran and Colbert each had four points for WSU during the run.
 
Wayne State would only get within nine on two occasions the rest of the way.
 
Colbert led three Warriors in double figures with 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.  Cochran added 16 points and eight boards with Crumpton chipping in 14 points.
 
Mast led all scorers with 23 points including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc.
 
Wayne State will travel to Ohio Dominican for a 1 p.m. tip-off on Saturday in its final road game not in the Upper Peninsula.
