Columbus, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (10-7 overall, 7-4 GLIAC) won for just the second time in the last eight contests, but the Warriors led wire-to-wire in today's
71-48 win at Ohio Dominican University (3-14 overall, 0-11 GLIAC).
WSU raced out to a 4-0 advantage on a basket by sophomore forward
Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) and a tip-in by senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower). After a conventional three-point play by Panther Zak Kapron, the Warriors tallied the next 10 points incuding five by Coleman.
Following an ODU lay-up, WSU answered with a 10-1 run concluding a triple by Coleman, who scored a career-high 27 points, in just his second career start.
The Panthers would get no closer than 16 points (24-8) the rest of the first half. A stifling Warrior defense in the opening 20 minutes limited ODU to 16 percent (4-of-25) from the floor as WSU held a 38-16 lead at intermission. Coleman had 19 minutes at half, outscoring the entire ODU squad by three in the first half.
Wayne State's lead remained between 20 and 26 points for the first nine minutes of the second half, until a 9-2 Panther run cut the deficit to 17 (54-37) with just under 10 minutes remaining.
A 15-3 WSU spurt secured the Warriors fourth road victory of the season.
In addition to Coleman's game-high 27 points, Udanoh added 16 points and a game-best seven rebounds, while junior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) added 15 points.
Aaron Gibbs led ODU with 11 points.
Wayne State will play five of its next seven contests at the Matthaei beginning with Thursday's match vs. Ashland.
