GAMES 18 & 19 STORYLINES
After a disappointing setback at Tiffin on Jan. 19, Wayne State rebounded for a win at Ohio Dominican on Saturday.
The Warriors begin a stretch of five home games in the next seven contests as Ashland and Lake Erie visit the Motor City this week for a pair of South Division matches.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Wayne State has won five of the last six meetings vs. the Eagles with the only blemish being a 57-56 setback a year ago. WSU is 16-7 at home against AU over the last 38 years.
WSU has been victorious in all three prior meetings with the Storm, including a 60-52 triumph in Detroit on Dec. 2, 2010.
TIFFIN RECAP
WSU fell 83-77 at Tiffin on Jan. 19 for its first setback ever against the Dragons (WSU had won all 11 previous meetings).
The Warriors scored the first four points and never trailed in the first half. Wayne State's biggest lead of the first half (16, 34-18) came with 4:30 remaining on the third triple of the first half by
Cole Prophet.
The Warriors shot 41 percent (15-of-37) from the floor in the first half while Tiffin made 27 percent (9-of-33).
The Dragons began the second half on fire scoring 24 points in less than five minutes after being held to 23 points in the first half (WSU led 36-23 at intermission).
When the first media timeout occurred at the 13:32 mark, Tiffin had a three-point lead at 50-47 after out-scoring the Warriors 26-11, including two triples by Joe Graessle.
There were five ties over a five minute period with the last coming at 67 with just over five minutes left. Tiffin scored the next six points to grab a 73-67 lead. A jumper by
Ian Larkin cut the deficit to four, but the Warriors would get no closer than five the rest of the way.
Tiffin shot 75 percent (21-of-28) from the floor in the second half.
Prophet and
Ike Udanoh tied for team-high scoring honors with 16 points each as five Warriors scored in double figures.
OHIO DOMINICAN RECAP
WSU won for just the second time in the last eight contests, but the Warriors led wire-to-wire in a 71-48 win at ODU.
WSU raced out to a 4-0 advantage on a basket by
Bryan Coleman and a tip-in by Udanoh. After a conventional three-point play by Panther Zak Kapron, the Warriors tallied the next 10 points incuding five by Coleman.
Following an ODU lay-up, WSU answered with a 10-1 run concluding a triple by Coleman, who scored a career-high 27 points, in just his second career start.
The Panthers would get no closer than 16 points (24-8) the rest of the first half. A stifling Warrior defense in the opening 20 minutes limited ODU to 16 percent (4-of-25) from the floor as WSU held a 38-16 lead at intermission. Coleman had 19 points at half, outscoring the entire ODU squad by three.
Wayne State's lead remained at least 20 points for the first nine minutes of the second half, until a 9-2 Panther run cut the deficit to 17 (54-37) with just under 10 minutes remaining.
A 15-3 WSU spurt secured the Warriors' fourth road victory of the season.
