DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-9, 5-7 GLIAC) suffered its fourth loss in the last five games,
112-75, to ninth-ranked Ashland University (17-1, 11-0 GLIAC) on Thursday night at the Matthaei.
While the Warriors were only outscored, 46-39, in the second half, it was the Eagles' 66 first-half points which led them to their 17th consecutive victory and their eighth in the last nine meetings with Wayne State. Ashland also set school records for points and three-pointers.
WSU went over the 70-point mark for the fourth straight game, and had its bench contribute 42 of the team's 75 points. Eight Warriors had at least six points, led by
Paige Sickmiller (Romeo, Mich.) and
Chloe Srebernak (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South) who had 12 and 10, respectively.
Kari Daugherty, the GLIAC's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 25 points, and Ashley Dorner contributed 22 points. The two forwards shot a combined 78 percent (18-for-23) as the Eagles shot 64 percent overall in the game.
Ashland was also 12-for-21 from three point range (WSU finished 6-for-16) and 24-for-27 from the free throw line (WSU was 7-for-13).
A three-pointer by Lindsay Tenyak at 14:28 gave Ashland a 17-7 lead, and the Eagles maintained a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the contest. Daugherty's jumper at 6:19 made it a 43-22 score, and Wayne State was never within fewer than 20 points the rest of the way.
Ashland reached the century mark on two free throws by Chelsea Laporte with seven minutes left, becoming the first team to score 100 points against WSU in six years. In the final minute, the Eagles broke the WSU record for points allowed, which was established at Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 6, 1986 (110).
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) scored seven points in her first career start, and
Deiona Rogers (Grand Rapids, Mich./Union) chipped in eight points off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting.
