GAMES 12 & 13 STORYLINES
Wayne State begins 2012 on a two-game losing streak after dropping a pair of in-region non-league road games last week at Wisconsin-Parkside (62-52) and Lewis (52-41).
All 14 contests in the new calendar year will be GLIAC games.
WSU will play its next four games against Hillsdale and Findlay as the Warriors play on the road twice this week then host the Chargers and the Oilers the following week.
ALL-TIME SERIES
WSU snapped an eight-game losing skein at HC with a 66-52 triumph on Jan. 13, 2011. The Warriors have a 15-21 all-time mark at Jesse Philips Arena.
Wayne State has lost its last 13 meetings vs. the Oilers at Croy Gymnasium and have a 3-16 record at Croy vs. Findlay.
WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE RECAP
Wayne State's eight-game winning streak came to an end on Dec. 29 with a 62-52 setback at Wisconsin-Parkside.
The game started promising for the Warrior defense as it held the host Rangers to one made field goal in the first four minutes.
In the final 5:30 before intermission, the Warriors made just two field goals and were outscored 12-5 giving the Rangers the largest lead of the game at 40-25 at halftime.
The trademark Warrior defense was on display for most of the second half as WSU only allowed one made field goal in the first 8:40 after intermission, while
Ian Larkin scored seven consecutive points to cut a 14-point deficit in half.
Cole Prophet hit a jumper to conclude the 9-0 Warrior run.
Stacey Waters keyed a 7-0 WSU streak by scoring four consecutive points.
Gerald Williams-Taylor split a pair from the charity stripe and Prophet scored to make it a two-point game with 4:24 left. The Warriors had another apparent bucket about 30 seconds before Williams-Taylor went to the line, but an “interesting” offensive goaltending call on
Ike Udanoh did not make it a three-point game.
Udanoh recorded his sixth double-double of the campaign with a team-high 17 points and a game-best 10 rebounds.
LEWIS RECAP
Three lead changes and four tied scores highlighted the first half in Romeoville, Ill.
A jumper by Prophet tied the game at 25 and 20 seconds later Udanoh split a pair from the foul line. A jumper by Lewis was answered with a triple by Waters with 17:14 remaining giving the Warriors a 29-27 lead. Lewis went on an 11-0 run as Wayne State was unable to score for the next 10:24 of the contest.
WSU made four triples compared to one for Lewis. However, the Flyers were the beneficiaries as the officials granted Lewis 26 free throw attempts to eight for Wayne State.
Prophet was the lone Warrior in double figures with 11 points, while
Dale Brundidge added nine points and five rebounds.
ON THE BENCH
David Greer, just the ninth head coach in 94 years of WSU basketball, is in his 11th season at WSU with a 157-132 record.
He is the fifth-longest tenured coach at WSU. The 22 victories by the Warriors in 2010-11 were the most since the 1998-99 NCAA qualifying squad compiled a 25-5 record.
Wayne State's 14 GLIAC wins last year are the most since the same 1998-99 team took first place with a 16-3 mark.
John Tharp has a record of 77-45 in his fifth year with the Chargers. Charlie Ernst has compiled a 10-2 record in his first year with the Oilers after serving the previous 20 years as an assistant to Ron Niekamp.
