GAMES 13 & 14 STORYLINES
Wayne State concluded the non-conference portion of its schedule with a home split, falling to St. Joseph's (91-82) on Thursday but upending Southern Indiana (77-58) on Friday. The Warriors finished with a 5-2 non-GLIAC slate.
Wayne State's final 14 contests are against league rivals. The Warriors enter the stretch drive in a four-way tie for seventh in the GLIAC.
The top three teams in each division and the next two teams with the best records will be seeded #1-8 regardless of division for the GLIAC tournament.
ALL-TIME SERIES
WSU ended its five-game overall losing streak vs. Hillsdale in the 2010-11 season finale. The Warriors are 11-22 all-time at Jesse Philips Arena and have lost in 17 of the last 18 in Hillsdale (lone win was a 67-64 victory on March 1, 2008, in the GLIAC tournament).
The Oilers won both meetings last year and four of the last five. WSU has a 4-11 record at Croy Gymnasium, including setbacks in the last four trips to Findlay.
SAINT JOSEPH'S RECAP
In a contest which saw seven lead changes and nine ties, the Pumas defeated the Warriors by nearly the same score as their Dec. 10 meeting (90-82) to sweep the home-and-home series.
Leading six Warriors in double-figures was
Juanita Cochran, who had nine rebounds to go with her 18 points. Cochran shot 8-for-10 from the field.
Deanna Crumpton finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, while
Phaebre Colbert just missed one with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors controlled the boards (57-34) but allowed 19 points off 20 turnovers. St. Joseph's also went to the free throw line 35 times (made 19) compared to 19 trips for Wayne State (16).
SOUTHERN INDIANA RECAP
Wayne State was aggressive right out of the gates, jumping out to a 14-0 lead and holding USI without a field goal for the first 5:07 of the game. The Warriors out-shot the Screaming Eagles, 46.3-26.9 percent, in the opening 20 minutes.
Leading the charge was
Paige Sickmiller who had team-highs in points (15) and rebounds (7). Sickmiller shot 7-for-14 from the field and finished two points shy of her season-high.
Colbert and Crumpton totaled 10 points and six rebounds apiece.
Stefani Munro contributed in all aspects, finishing with seven points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals.
The Warriors led by as many as 32 in the second half before the Screaming Eagles chipped away late in the game.
WSU was again dominant on the boards, out-rebounding USI by a 59-32 margin. The Warriors have won the rebounding battle in every game this season, and did so by a combined 116-66 margin over the two games last week.
