Hillsdale, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (8-4 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) suffered its first conference loss of the season with a
57-48 setback at Hillsdale College (12-1 overall, 6-0 GLIAC) Thursday evening in the first of 14 straight conference games for the Warriors.
WSU had an 11-point lead (31-20) late in the first half following a triple by junior guard
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio), but Charger Tim Dezelski answered with a three-pointer of his own in the final 30 seconds before intermission.
The Warriors held a nine-point advantage (40-31) with just under 14 minutes remaining following a basket by senior center
Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower). Hillsdale scored the next five points including another triple by Dezelski before Prophet connected on a jumper at the 10:12 mark. It would be WSU's last made field goal of the game.
A 5-0 Charger run ended with a pair of Udanoh free throws with 7:49 left which gave the Warriors a 44-41 lead. Two free throws by HC's Brad Guinane was followed by a pair of foul shots by Prophet at the 6:38 mark.
Dezelski hit his third triple of the contest with 3:31 left giving the Chargers their first lead since 17-15. Prophet again made two free throws with 2:37 remaining to knot the game at 48. Guinane hit a fade away three-pointer with 2:08 left putting HC in front 51-48 and start a run of nine straight Charger points to end the game.
Udanoh recorded his seventh double-double of the campaign with a game-high 18 points along with a game-best 11 rebounds. Prophet added 17 points.
Dezelski led the Chargers with 13 points off the bench.
Wayne State will conclude its four-game road trip with a 3 p.m. tip-off Saturday at Findlay.
