DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad broke two pool records Friday afternoon, but ultimately dropped a 157-86 decision to Eastern Michigan University in its first home meet of the season.
Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil) broke two Matthaei Pool records for the Warriors, placing first in the 50 freestyle (23.80) and first in the 200 backstroke (2:01.58).
Elly Maleski (Cedar, Mich./Traverse City West),
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich.), Azambuja and
Ashley Corriveau (Metamora, Mich./Lapeer East) teamed in the 200 medley relay, placing first and finishing with a time of 1:48.67 for the Warriors.
Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia) earned a first-place finish, winning the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.67 for the Warriors.
Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich./Dow) earned top honors in the 500 freestyle for WSU, finishing with a time of 5:05.24.
Corriveau placed second in the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.71.
Third-place honors were earned by
Alycen Wiacek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.42),
Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich.) in the 200 freestyle (2:01.04) and
Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica Eisenhower) in the 200 individual medley (2:13.14).
The Warrior quartet of Corriveau, Prentis, Maleski and Novichenko earned a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:40.58.
In diving,
Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich./Holland) finished in third (269.69 points) in the 1-meter competition, while
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) placed third (277.95 points) in the 3-meter contest.
Wayne State returns to the pool Friday, Nov. 6 when the Warriors host Calvin College for a 6 p.m. meet.
