Tiffin, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (2-1 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) began league play with an 83-71 triumph at Tiffin University (2-3 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) scored a career-high 29 points to lead five Warriors in double figures. Junior forward
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) tied a career-best with 14 points. Redshirt junior guard
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.), in his first start of the season, tallied 13 poins and a game-high nine rebounds.
Phillips made his last 13 free throw attempts after missing his first foul shot late in the first half.
WSU scored the first six points on a jumper by Williams-Taylor, two free throws by Hollingsworth, and a jumper by senior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance).
After a triple by Dragon Cody Dennison, the Warriors went on a 15-7 spurt to open an 11-point advantage at 21-10. Wayne State led by as many as 13 on three ocassions including the halftime score of 38-25.
Tiffin started the second half on a 19-9 run to pull within three at 47-44 at the 12:50 mark following a conventional three-point play by Michael Bouley. WSU responded by scoring seven of the next nine points to open an eight-point lead at 54-46.
Following another triple by Dennison cut the Warrior lead to five (54-49) at the 11:08 mark, Wayne State answered with a 8-2 run for a 62-51 advantage at the 8:00 mark.
Wayne State's lead was never fewer than seven the rest of the contest.
The Warriors shot 82 percent (23-of-28) from the foul line in the second half.
Joe Graessle led the Dragons with 25 points.
Wayne State continues its road trip with a 1 p.m. tip Saturday at Ohio Dominican.
