WEEK 6 STORYLINES
Wayne State resumes league play this Thursday as the lone unbeaten squad in the conference. Both of WSU's setbacks were to top-20 non-conference foes.
All of WSU's remaining regular-season contests are GLIAC matchups. The Warriors take a 5-0 record vs. the GLIAC South into this weeks games against Hillsdale and Findlay, which begins a four-game homestand for WSU.
ALL-TIME SERIES
The Warriors lead the Chargers 44-35 in a series that began in 1932. HC won both meetings last year snapping a three-game WSU winning streak.
David Greer is 10-13 against Hillsdale including 8-3 at the Matthaei.
Wayne State is 3-3 in the last six meetings vs. Findlay after the Oilers had won 12 consecutive contests. WSU has won the last two at the Matthaei and are 12-6 all-time vs. UF in Detroit.
LAST TIME OUT
WSU closed out the pre-holiday portion of its schedule with a 70-59 triumph at Malone University on Dec. 19.
In Coach Greer's hometown, the Warriors came out firing scoring 13 points in the first 4:40 of the game. WSU's 10 consecutive points came courtesy of five points each from
Chene Phillips and
Mike Hollingsworth.
The only tie of the game came at 7-7.
MU answered with a 5-0 run with
Bryan Coleman draining a triple to end the spurt. Malone's Christian Graves hit back-to-back three pointers before
Gerald Williams-Taylor scored to push the WSU lead to four.
Another Graves triple was answered with a Hollingsworth shot from beyond the arc. MU's Isiah Elliott hit his lone three-pointer of the game cutting the Wayne State advantage to one (25-24).
The squads traded free throws before an 8-0 run by the Warriors made it a 34-25 game with just under five minutes remaining in the first half.
The Warriors shot a blistering 73 percent (16-of-22) from the floor in the first half including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to grab a 40-30 advantage.
The Pioneers scored the first five points of the second half to pull within five forcing a WSU timeout. Four straight points by Phillips established a nine-point lead.
Wayne State had a 10-point lead with 8:30 left, before Malone went on a 8-0 run to pull within two prior to a conventional three-point play by
Jamar Ragland. WSU's run continued with back-to-back conventional three-point plays by Hollingsworth and Phillips. Malone never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
Hollingsworth finished with a game-high 20 points, while tying for team-high honors with six rebounds with
Ian Larkin. Phillips contributed 18 points with Ragland adding 10 points off the bench.
SCOUTING HILLSDALE
The Chargers enter 2013 with a 4-2 league mark along with a 4-0 non-conference record which includes wins over St. Joseph's and Lewis. HC's other two wins are against Olivet and Michigan-Dearborn.
Junior forward Tim Dezelski leads the team in scoring (16.3 points per game), while senior center Nick Washburn (13.0 ppg) and junior guard Anthony Manno (12.5 ppg in four games) are also averaging in double figures.
Sophomore guard Brandon Pritzl, who averages 9.9 ppg, is tied with Dezelski for the squad lead in assists (27) and three-pointers made (18), and is first in steals (12).
Dezelski also leads the team in rebounds (80), while Washburn is first in blocked shots (18).
Hillsdale has only played two away games this season.
SCOUTING FINDLAY
The Oilers have won eight of nine since a season-opening loss (90-74) to top-ranked West Liberty. UF defeated Northwestern Ohio 74-38 on Dec. 29.
Findlay will play just its third road game of the season on Jan. 3 at Saginaw Valley. The Oilers split their previous road trip falling at Michigan Tech (49-66) before winning an 80-62 decision at Northern Michigan.
Greg Kahlig leads UF in scoring at 15.1 points per game, while Brad Piehl (11.6) and Aaron Robinson (10.8) are also averaging in double figures.
Robinson has team-best totals of 20 triples and 15 steals with Sean Samsel averaging a team-high 3.3 assists per game.
Mark Frilling is the top rebounder (5.3 per game), while also leading the Oilers in blocked shots with 10.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Warriors are ranked No. 18 nationally in the most recent Massey Ratings, which were released on Dec. 29.
Hillsdale is ranked 41st while Findlay is at 24th.
WSU's non-league foes Bellarmine (2nd), Lewis (22nd) and Drury (23rd) are all ranked in the top 25.
Findlay's season-opening opponent West Liberty is the top-ranked squad in Division II.
ON THE WAYNE STATE BENCH
David Greer is in his 12th season as the men's basketball head coach at WSU. Greer has a 173-140 record with the Warriors and is the fifth-longest tenured head coach in WSU men's basketball history.
Greer needs six wins to tie Newman Ertell (1929-48) for third place in wins at WSU with 179.
He needs four league victories to equal the WSU all-time mark of 119 set by Ron Hammye (1988-2001).
ON THE OPPOSING BENCH
Hillsdale's John Tharp is in his sixth season as head men's basketball coach for the Chargers. His record at HC stands at 98-52.
Charlie Ernst is in his second year as head coach at Findlay. He guided the Oilers to a 24-7 mark and a GLIAC tournament title in his inaugural season.
