Box Score
DETROIT - The Wayne State University women's basketball team (12-5 overall, 10-3 GLIAC) entered Saturday's game against Grand Valley (13-5 overall, 9-5 GLIAC) at 9-3 in the GLIAC, merely percentage points behind Michigan Tech for first place in the North Division. The Lakers were no match for the Green and Gold however as Wayne State earned the 72-59 home-court victory.
The Warriors featured a balanced attack that included four players scoring in double figures, senior forward
Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) led the way with 14 points. Bridges made buckets in key moments of the game and shut down Grand Valley's Briauna Taylor in the first half defensively. The Lakers' leader was held to just five first half points and much of that had to do with the defense of Bridges.
Although Bridges led WSU in points it was actually senior forward
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) who was selected as Xfinity's player of the game as she led the Warrior bench with 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. That bench contributed 39 points for coach
Carrie Lohr which was 30 more than the opposition. The WSU ladies have been deep all year long and that has been the key to their success despite injuries.
Freshman guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) scored 11 while senior center
Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) missed a double-double by a single rebound with 10 points and nine boards.
Grand Valley scored the first three points of the game but WSU quickly tied it up and took the lead for good. Key three-pointers by Streetman, freshman guard
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) and junior forward
Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) opened this game up in the first half and the Warriors extended that advantage to 23 at one point in the second half.
The Green and Gold will have a week off before hosting Lake Superior State University (5-13, 4-10 GLIAC) next Saturday in the Matthaei.
