Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (1-1 overall) suffered a 102-72 setback Saturday afternoon at 28th-ranked University of Indianapolis (5-2 overall) as the Greyhounds shot 50 percent (11-of-22) from beyond the arc and only had seven turnovers in the contest.
The Warriors began the contest with a 5-0 run on a lay-up by senior
Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) and a conventional three-point play by junior
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc).
Four consecutive made free throws by Redfield increased the WSU lead to 9-2 just 4:20 into the match.
Six straight UIndy points preceded a jumper by Brown. The first of eight first half triples by the Greyhounds knotted the game at 11 with just under 13 minutes remaining.
The hosts led 19-18 at the mid point of the opening 20 minutes following a three-pointer by junior
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix), who was making her second collegiate start (first since Dec. 10, 2011, for Cleveland State at Toledo).
The game was tied at 20, 25 and 26 before WSU took its final lead at 27-26 on a pair of free throws by Brown. Indianapolis closed out the final six minutes before intermission with a 25-6 run for a 51-33 advantage at halftime, which included five triples - three by Kelly Walter and two from Shelby Wall.
Brown led all scorers after 20 minutes with 15 points, while junior
Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) contributed seven points in eight minutes.
Katy McIntosh (7-8 FT) and each had 11 points for the Greyhounds as the hosts shot 55 percent (17-of-31) in the first half.
UIndy held an 18-2 margin in points off turnovers in the first half and finished the contest with a 26-8 advantage.
Another conventional three-point play by Brown five minutes into the second half cut the Warrior deficit to 14 (55-41), but over the next 6:30 Indianapolis extended its lead with a 19-11 scoring edge.
Brown led Wayne State with 23 points to pace three Warriors in double figures. Redfield and sophomore
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) each added 11 points with Redfield grabbing a team-best eight rebounds.
McIntosh tallied a game-high 28 points which included 16-of-17 at the charity stripe. Wall and Walter each notched 11 points with Eliza Wortman contributing 19 points and a game-best nine rebounds.
Wayne State begins GLIAC play at home this Thursday with a 5:30 pm tip against Tiffin. The game will be televised live throughout the state of Michigan on Comcast channel 900.
