PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-1, 3-0) used a strong first half to stay unbeaten in GLIAC play at Lake Erie (3-6, 0-3) with a 79-70 win on Saturday afternoon.
Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) scored a career-high 24 points while
Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) finished with 22 points.
Coleman gave WSU a 16-4 lead on his first three-pointer of the night at the 15-minute mark. The Warriors held the Storm scoreless from the 12:31 mark until the 7:54 mark. The deficit reached 21 on a jumper from
Michael Martin (West Bloomfield, Mich.) to give WSU a 34-13 lead with 3:20 to play before halftime.
At the break, WSU led 34-19. Toma led all scorers with 12 points including two triples during the first 20 minutes. The Storm ended the half on a 6-0 run.
WSU increased its lead to 22, 50-28, on a Coleman jumper at the 14:24 mark. With nine minutes remaining, the Storm made its run. A 6-0 LEC run cut WSU's lead to 58-49 at the eight-minute mark.
Nick Wells connected on a three-pointer to trim WSU's advantage to seven with 7:37 to play. However, that would be as close as the Storm would get the rest of the contest. Coleman hit another triple to put the Warriors back on top by double-digits at 65-53 with 5:34 to play.
Also in double-figures for the Warriors were
Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) and
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich. / Northern) with 11 points a piece. Williams-Taylor also pulled down seven boards.
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) finished with seven points and seven rebounds.
Riley Thomas and Garrick Sims led the Storm with 14 points each.
WSU outrebounded LEC 38-25 and shot 49.1 percent (28-57) from the floor.
The Warriors will play at Ashland on Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
