DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (14-6 overall, 13-4 GLIAC) lost its third consecutive league game Thursday evening dropping a 67-61 overtime decision to visiting Michigan Tech (16-6 overall, 13-5 GLIAC).
The game had 17 lead changes and 12 ties, with the largest lead of the game coming midway through the first half (MTU 18-10), but WSU answered with a 10-0 run and led 25-22 at the break following a triple by junior forward
Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup).
Both team struggled from the field in the opening 20 minutes as the Warriors made 33 percent (10-of-30) compared to 29 percent (7-of-24) for the Huskies. Both squads made four free throws, with MTU connecting on 4-of-13 from beyond the arc.
Michigan Tech's Ali Haidar scored the first seven points of the second half to give the visitors a 29-24 advantage. WSU didn't take the lead again until the 10:10 mark on a lay-up by junior forward
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern), who finished with career-highs of 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Over nearly a six minute stretch, the game was tied six times with MTU having the largest lead at four points (46-42). Coleman split a pair from the foul line to knot the game at 52 with 95 seconds left in regulation.
Michigan Tech's T.J. Brown scored with 44 seconds remaining, but junior guard
Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) answered with 27 seconds left. Brown's off-balance triple try at the buzzer was off the mark.
Senior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) gave the Warriors their only lead of the extra session (55-54) by splitting a pair from the charity stripe. A jumper by Brown and a three-pointer by Alex Culy put MTU ahead 59-55. Williams-Taylor responded with a bucket cutting the deficit to two (59-57) but after Haidar made both free throw attempts on the ensuing possession, Wayne State was not able to get closer than three the rest of the way.
Haidar tallied a game-high 29 points along with 14 rebounds. Matt Esters was the only other Huskie in double figures with 12 points and a team-best four assists.
In addition to Williams-Taylor double-double, Coleman contributed 15 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) added 12 points and five assists.
