Women's Basketball Moves Into First Place With 69-59 Victory

At 11-3 in GLIAC play, the Warriors have their most conference victories since 2002-03

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (13-5 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) scored nine of the final 12 points on Saturday to win its fourth straight contest with a 69-59 victory over Lake Superior State University (5-14, 4-11 GLIAC).

With the victory and a Michigan Tech loss to Northern Michigan, the Warriors moved into first place in the GLIAC North Division. The 11 wins in conference play are the most for WSU since the 2002-03 squad that finished 12-5.

Senior Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) scored a team-high 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting to lead Wayne State. Senior Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill) added 13 points, while freshman Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) scored 11 points and posted career-highs of five assists and four steals.

WSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead as three different players scored buckets. LSSU scored six of the next eight points, but the Warriors followed with a 7-0 run to go up 15-6 with 12:19 left in the first half.

The Warriors led by as much as 12 points in the first half, ultimately taking a 34-26 halftime lead. Cochran scored eight points, Streetman notched seven points and senior Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) tallied six points and five rebounds off the bench in the first half for WSU.

LSSU came out firing in the second half, scoring 14 of the first 18 points to tie the game at 40 with 11:16 left in the contest. The Lakers took their first lead on free throws by Candice LaCross to give Lake Superior a 44-42 advantage with 10:10 to go in the game.

Wayne State countered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead. Streetman hit the go-ahead jumper, Talisha Bridges followed with a bucket of her own and free throws by Colbert and Imari Redfield (Detroit, Mich. / Country Day) made it 51-44 with 6:34 left in the contest.

Lake Superior would pull to within four points, 60-56, with 81 seconds left in the contest, but WSU scored nine of the final 12 points. The Warriors were 7-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:21 to clinch the victory. Junior Lena Thomas (Bloomfield Twp., Mich. / Bloomfield Hills Andover) sank two free throws and Talisha Bridges was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 1:01.

Senior Maria Blazejewski scored a game-high 24 points for LSSU, making 7-of-22 shots. She was the lone Laker in double figures. Taylor Greene added seven points and nine rebounds for Lake Superior.

Colbert pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and added seven points for WSU.

The Warriors improved to 13-3 when outrebounding their opponent and 13-0 when leading at halftime. The Warriors had a 46-39 rebound advantage. The Warriors were 17-for-26 from the free throw line, while LSSU was 17-for-24 from the free throw stripe.
