Allendale, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (18-6 overall, 16-4 GLIAC) had its nine-game winning streak snapped with a 61-58 setback at Grand Valley (18-7 overall, 14-7 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon. Even with the loss, the Warriors are first in the GLIAC North Division and third overall in the GLIAC.
The game started promising for WSU as the visitors scored buckets on its first three possessions to take a 6-0 lead 84 seconds after the opening tip. Freshman guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich./Lincoln) made the first jumper, then senior forward
Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) scored on back-to-back shot attempts.
After four straight Laker points made it 6-4, Wayne State went on a 13-0 run to grab a 19-4 advantage at the 11:39 mark. Six different Warriors scored during the spurt led by freshman guard
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich./Durand), who had four points.
A Briauna Taylor jumper ended the scoreless drought at just under eight minutes.
Talisha Bridges' jumper at the 7:20 mark gave the Warriors a 17-point margin at 27-10.
GVSU ended the first half on a 12-3 run to pull within eight at intermission. WSU was just 1-of-16 from the field over the final seven minutes of the first half.
Wayne State maintained its lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half and even led 46-39 just past the mid-point after a lay-up by senior forward
Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern).
A 9-3 run by GVSU over the next 1:45 made it a one-point contest (49-48). Colbert restored a three-point advantage with a basket, but four straight free throws by the Lakers put them in front for the first time at 52-51. Senior center
Juanita Cochran (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) made both foul shots switching the lead back to WSU (53-52).
The teams traded leads for the next three minutes until a triple by GVSU's Dani Crandall with just over a minute remaining gave the Lakers a 59-58 lead. Taylor split a pair from the charity stripe and the Warriors missed two field goal attempts that would have tied the game in the final 30 seconds.
Talisha Bridges led WSU with a double-double tallying 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Colbert had a team-high 16 points. Cochran finished with a game-best 15 rebounds along with Bridges.
Taylor led all scorers with 23 points and had a GVSU-high 14 rebounds.
Wayne State's magic number is two to clinch the GLIAC North Division (combination of WSU wins and Michigan Tech losses). WSU visits Walsh on Wednesday (8 p.m.) and Lake Superior (3 p.m.) on Saturday.
