GAME STORYLINES
The first-place Warriors can clinch the GLIAC North Division title with wins in their final two games of the regular season.
Wayne State wraps up its schedule with road contests Wednesday at Walsh and Saturday at Lake Superior.
WSU has already secured a home playoff game for the GLIAC Tournament, which will be played Wednesday, March 6 in the Matthaei.
IN THE RANKINGS
Wayne State is No. 25 in the most recent Massey Ratings, which were released on Feb. 25. Ashland (No. 1) and Findlay (No. 20) were the only GLIAC teams ahead of the Warriors in the Massey Ratings.
WSU had a No. 4 ranking in the Midwest portion of NCAA's Regional Rankings, which was relased on Feb. 20. Ashland had the top ranking, followed by Findlay and Lewis at No. 3. Five GLIAC schools were represented in the initial rankings.
LAST WEEK
The Warriors won their ninth straight contest, 80-61, in the regular season home finale against Ferris State on Feb. 21. WSU had its longest winning streak since 2003 snapped Feb. 23 in a 61-58 road defeat at Grand Valley.
Brittany Streetman scored a career-high 20 points and
Phaebre Colbert notched her fourth straight double-double (19 points, 18 rebounds) in WSU's win over Ferris State. Wayne State led 41-34 at halftime and extended the lead by scoring the first five points of the second half.
WSU had a double-digit lead nearly the entire second half of the contest. Wayne State had advantages in rebounds (56-32), points in the paint (38-16) and bench points (44-24).
Stephanie Lock added 10 points off the bench for the Warriors.
The Warriors led 58-56 with 1:35 to go against GVSU, but the Lakers scored the final five points of the game for the victory. Grand Valley's Dani Crandall hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:02 left and WSU missed on all three field goal attempts with under a minute to go.
Colbert had 16 points to lead the Warriors, while
Talisha Bridges had 15 points and 15 rebounds.
Juanita Cochran added 15 boards for Wayne State.
SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State and Walsh are meeting for the first time in women's basketball. The Cavaliers joined the GLIAC for the 2012-13 season.
The Warriors have won the last five games against Lake Superior, including a 69-59 victory earlier this season (Feb. 2). Overall, the Lakers hold the series advantage, 38-28. Lake Superior is 17-15 at home against WSU.
SCOUTING WALSH
The Cavaliers are on a four-game losing streak and have lost eight of their last nine contests. Walsh is 5-8 at home overall and 2-7 on its own court in conference games.
Tracy Payne leads the Cavs in scoring at 13.9 points per game. She also leads Walsh in triples with 31 and is the leader in free-throw shooting percentage (78.3 percent).
Maggie Berry also averages in double figures for Walsh (10.8 ppg) and is tied for the team lead in blocks with 24. Berry is second on the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg). Whitney Dabbelt is the Walsh leader in rebounding (7.2 rpg) and also leads in steals (39) and blocks (24).
SCOUTING LAKE SUPERIOR
The Lakers have lost 11 straight games and haven't won since a 58-53 victory at Northwood on Jan. 12. LSSU is also 2-8 at home heading into its final home game against the Warriors.
Maria Blazejewski leads the Lakers and is third in the GLIAC in scoring at 17.7 points per game. She is also the LSSU leader in rebounding (6.6 rebounds per game).
Kandace Crittendon is second on the team in scoring at 9.2 ppg and leads Lake Superior with 49 assists. Raven Trammell is the Laker leader in triples made (44) and averages 8.8 points per game.
LSSU is next to last in the GLIAC in rebounding (34.4 rpg) and is 14th out of 16 teams in the conference in scoring offense (56.2 ppg).
ON THE BENCH
Carrie Lohr is in her second season as the head coach of the Wayne State women's basketball team. She has compiled a 30-20 record at WSU.
Walsh's Laurel Wartluft has a 112-97 record and is in her seventh season at the helm of the Cavaliers.
Shannon Eggers was named the interim LSSU head coach in August 2012. This is her first job as head coach.
