Play of the Game at Walsh - Larkin block and Hollingsworth lay-up.
North Canton, Ohio – The Wayne State University men's basketball team (17-7 overall, 16-5 GLIAC) will have to wait three more days to clinch its first GLIAC regular-season title since 1998-99 as the Warriors dropped an 81-78 decision at Walsh University (17-8 overall, 13-8 GLIAC) Wednesday evening.
Cavalier senior forward Kenny Kornowski scored a game-high 31 points including 21 of Walsh's final 25 points. He also totaled a game-best 11 rebounds.
WSU led 4-0 early on, but trailed 40-36 at the break as the Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the field on 15-of-31 in the opening 20 minutes including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. WU's Rian Burrell led the hosts with 12 points at intermission on 5-of-6 shooting including 2-of-3 on three pointers.
Meanwhile, the Warriors shot 59 percent (16-of-27), but had an uncharacteristic eight turnovers. Junior guard
Mike Hollingsworth (Utica, Mich.) had a game-high 13 points at the break on 5-of-5 from the field, 1-of-1 on triples and 2-of-2 at the foul line.
After a
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich./Northern) lay-up pulled Wayne State within two at the 19:12 mark, Walsh went on a 5-0 run to open a seven-point advantage. Back-to-back buckets by senior guard
Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) made it a three-point game.
WSU trailed by four to seven points, until another 5-0 run by the Cavaliers just before the mid-point of the second half gave the hosts a 10-point lead at 58-48.
An 8-2 run by the Warriors cut the deficit to four (60-56) as Hollingsworth scored five points and Williams-Taylor added three during the spurt.
Walsh regained a seven-point lead (69-62) at the 7:58 mark before Wayne State rallied with five consecutive points on a triple by senior forward
Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and a jumper by junior forward
Jamar Ragland (Detroit, Mich./Loyola), who tallied a career-high 15 points off the bench.
Prophet answered a Kornowski jumper with one of his own to keep a two-point game at 71-69.
The Warriors pulled within one at 72-71 with 5:11 left on a jumper by Propet but Kornowski scored the next four points. Two free throws by Hollingsworth and a baseline drive jumper sandwiched around a Walsh foul shot by Brad DuPont made it a two-point game at 77-75 with 57.9 remaining.
After a bucket by Kornowski, Williams-Taylor split a pair from the charity stripe with Hollingsworth grabbing a long rebound and was immediately fouled. He sank both free throws in a one-and-one situation making it a one-point game at 79-78 with 13.8 seconds left.
Kornowski made two free throws in a double bonus situation with 9.3 seconds left. Hollingsworth's long triple try bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Wayne State will close out the regular season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Lake Superior.
