GAME STORYLINES
Wayne State was selected on Sunday for the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. The Warriors will play as the No. 6 seed in the Midwest Regional Tournament, being held at Ashland University.
WSU also reached the NCAA Tournament in 2003, losing its first-round game at the University of Indianapolis, 91-83. The Warriors have never recorded an NCAA Tournament victory.
Wayne State faces Findlay for the second straight time this postseason. The Warriors' GLIAC Tournament run was ended by the Oilers in the semifinals on March 9.
LAST GAME
WSU suffered a 67-60 setback to UF in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals at Ashland.
Findlay concluded the opening 20 minutes on an 11-3 run to take a 28-24 lead at halftime. Both teams made nine field goals in the first half but UF was 7-of-12 from the foul line compared to 4-of-4 for WSU.
Wayne State outscored Findlay 8-3 in the first 2:30 of the second half to take a 32-31 lead.
Juanita Cochran's third basket after intermission increased the margin to three (34-31), and
Kristen Long added a three-pointer giving the Warriors their largest lead of the game at 37-31 with 13:34 remaining.
There was an eight-minute stretch in the second half (17:35-9:30) that WSU never trailed until a triple by UF's Karli Beasley put the Oilers in front 44-43 at the 9:28 mark. Following a Warrior turnover, Beasley scored on a fast break.
WSU cut the deficit to two (46-44) as Cochran split a pair from the foul line, but Findlay answered with a 13-7 run over the next five minutes increasing its lead to eight (59-51) with 2:37 left.
The Warriors responded with a 7-2 run making it a 61-58 contest in the final 40 seconds, but a pair of fast break lay-ups by the Oilers psuhed the lead to seven.
Cochran led WSU with 20 points and 15 rebounds while also blocking five shots.
Talisha Bridges was the only other Warrior in double figures with 13 points. She also dished out a game-best six assists.
After shooting 35 percent in the first half, Wayne State shot 47 percent (15-of-32) in the second half, but 13 turnovers in each half led to a 31-7 advantage in points off turnovers for the Oilers.
SERIES HISTORY
Wayne State has dropped three straight contests against Findlay. WSU last beat the Oilers, 75-72, in overtime at UF on Jan. 7, 2012, which was head coach
Carrie Lohr's first game against Findlay. Both losses this year against Findlay were by seven points or less.
SCOUTING FINDLAY
The Oilers were defeated in the GLIAC Tournament Finals by Ashland, 68-49. Findlay earned the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament. Overall, Findlay has won 13 of its last 14 games.
Senior forward Kayla Brown leads the Oilers in scoring at 17.6 points per game. She is first in steals (77) and three-pointers (63).
Senior forward Tai Dotson is second on UF in scoring at 9.4 ppg and leads the team in rebounding (5.3 rebounds per game), field goal percentage (54.8 percent) and blocks (23). Junior guard Ashley Andrews leads UF with 70 assists.
Findlay is second in the GLIAC in scoring (70.0 ppg), shooting percentage (42.0 percent) and first in the league in steals (12.9 spg).
CONFERENCE ACCOLADES
The Warriors earned several GLIAC honors following the completion of the tournament on March 10.
Lohr was named GLIAC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year in just her second season at Wayne State.
Talisha Bridges earned both All-GLIAC First Team and GLIAC All-Defensive Team accolades. Cochran and
Phaebre Colbert received All-GLIAC Second Team honors.
ON THE BENCH
Lohr is in her second season as the head coach of the Wayne State women's basketball team. She has compiled a 32-22 record at WSU.
Findlay's seventh-year head coach Kate Cummings has a record of 107-87 with the Oilers.
REBOUND WARRIORS
The Warriors rank third in the nation in rebound margin (+ 12.3). WSU is first in the GLIAC in rebounding (48.1 rpg) and offensive rebounding (19.2 rpg).
