SOMERS, Wis. -- The Wayne State University volleyball (3-3) squad was swept on Friday to begin the UW-Parkside Tournament. Wisconsin-Parkside (3-2) took the day's first match from WSU in straight sets. UWP took set one 25-16, set two 25-19 and set three 25-15. Second-ranked Minnesota Duluth (6-0) remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over the Warriors. The Bulldogs took set one 25-22, set two 25-7, WSU took set three 25-23 and UMD collected the victory with a 25-14 win in set four.
Kristen Bulkiewicz (LaSalle, Ont. / Sandwich) finished the day with 22 kills and 20 digs.
Match One - UW-Parkside (L, 0-3)
The Warriors jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set one following a  a UWP attack error. However, the host Rangers would storm back to tie the set at 10-10 and eventually lead 17-12. Another UWP attack error would pull WSU within three at 19-16 but that would be all the points the Warriors would collect in the opening set. UWP took the final six points to take set one 25-16.
The second set was tied at 4-4 after a kill from Bulkiewicz. The Green & Gold would lead 12-7 following a Ranger attack error. A service error would keep WSU ahead 16-14. The Rangers collected all the momentum and went on a 11-3 run to win the second set 25-19.
UWP led 7-3 to begin the third set. Wayne State came back to trail 9-7 after a kill from Candice Ottey (Ajax, Ont.). The Rangers would pull ahead 14-9 after four consecutive points. UWP would control the remainder of the set and cruise to a 25-15 set three victory and match sweep to collect its third win of the young season.
Bulkiewicz finished with 10 kills to lead all players and eight digs. Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind. / Avon) dished out 17 assists.
Match Two - #2 Minnesota Duluth (L, 1-3)
The powerhouse UMD Bulldogs and Wayne State began the match with a tightly contested first set. The set was tied at 9-9 following a UMD service error and the Warriors took a 13-10 lead on a Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Â Port Huron) kill. UMD would come back to tie the set at 15-15 and it was still tied at 20-20. However, the Bulldogs were the first to 25, taking the first set 25-22.
The Bulldogs would take set two with ease combining runs of 6-0, 5-0 and 8-0 to win 25-7.
The Green & Gold answered the bell and responded with a well-played third set. Â Ottey gave WSU a 10-8 advantage. An attack error out the Warriors up 13-12 but UMD would tie the match at 16-16 after a WSU attack error. Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) got into the action with a kill to tie the match at 20-20. Wayne State would take the set 25-23 on a UMD service error.
A 7-0 run gave UMD a 10-5 lead and forced head coach Phil Nickel to call a timeout. The Bulldogs would extend its lead to 15-7 and then 22-10. WSU attempted a comeback with three straight points to cut the deficit to 24-14 but UMD would take the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
Bulkiewicz led the Warriors with 12 kills and 12 digs. Reeves collected 28 assists. UMD was paced by Kate Lange who tallied 27 kills and 16 digs.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday against #19 Indianapolis at 10 AM and Lewis at 2:30 PM.
