Box Score MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basktball team (11-2 overall, 8-1 GLIAC) had its 10-game winning streak snapped with a 77-65 setback at Northwood University (7-6 overall, 5-4 GLIAC) Thursday evening.
The Warriors trailed most of the first half as Northwood jumped out to a 13-7 at the first media timeout. Junior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) scored seven of WSU's first 10 points, but the Timberwolves earned a double-digit lead after Sarah Susan made it 20-10 on a lay-up with 11:44 remaining in the first half.
The Warriors chipped away at the deficit and trailed by one point, 28-27, after Brown converted a three-pointer from the top of the key with 6:22 remaining in the half. Northwood would proceed to go on an 11-0 run to lead by 12 points, 39-27, with 3:17 left in the first half.
Wayne State scored the final six points of the first half, after junior
Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) converted on a pair of free throws, and Brown and junior
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) added consecutive lay-ups. WSU trailed at halftime, 39-33. Brown had 18 points and eight rebounds at halftime, sinking 8 of 9 shots.
The Warriors came out of the break strong, scoring 10 of the first 12 points to take a 43-41 lead. Consecutive triples by sophomore
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) and Jones gave WSU its first lead since a 2-0 lead to start the game.
WSU continued to build upon its lead, leading 53-47 after two free throws by Brown and again at 55-49 after a jumper by Lavita-Stephens. Northwood's Lauren Robak, who scored a game-high 27 points, scored nine straight points, however, to secure the lead for Northwood once again, 58-55 with 6:53 remaining.
NU's Sarah Susan added a free throw and Robak sank two foul shots as Northwood completed its 12-0 run with a 61-55 lead and 5:46 left on the game clock.
Sophomore
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) connected on a three-pointer for WSU to pull the game to within three points, 61-58, but that's as close as the Warriors would get.
Northwood scored 10 of the next 11 points to go up 71-59 with just 3:36 left in the contest. The Warriors would get no closer than eight points the remainder of the game.
Brown led Wayne State with 23 points on 9 of 10 shooting and 16 rebounds. It was her sixth double-double of the season. Jones added 13 points and six rebounds, while junior
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) had 11 points off the bench for WSU.
Wayne State shot 41.0 percent from the floor and held the advantage in rebounding (42-39). WSU was 5-for-16 from beyond the arc, while Northwood was 7-for-22. WSU also converted just 10 of 19 free throw attempts.
The Warriors next play Saturday at Saginaw Valley.
