Women's Swimming & Diving Earns 168-121 Win at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio --
The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team won its second dual meet in the past six days Friday, defeating the University of Findlay 168-121 at the Sink Natatorium.

Freshman Holly Krill (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) became the fourth WSU women's diver to exceed an NCAA qualifying standard so far this season, earning 266.85 points on the three-meter board on her way to winning the competition.

Senior Carol Azambuja (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Emily Maraskine (Midland, Mich. / Dow) finished 1-2 in the 50 freestyle. Azambuja, who already has a "B" cut qualifying time in the 50 free, lowered her season-best time Friday touching in 23.66. Maraskine had a time of 25.42. Maraskine also won the 100 backstroke, earning a time of 59.58.

Azambuja also won the 50 butterfly, earning a time of 26.23.

Junior Kei Cze Prentis (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) placed first in the 200 freestyle (1:58.21), while freshman Emily Heitchue (Royal Oak, Mich. / Royal Oak) finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.85). Heitchue was first in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall more than a second better than anyone else in 1:08.53. Prentis also had the best time in the 100 IM (1:02.91).

Senior Cristina Busquets Garcia (Banyoles, Spain) tied for first in 50 backstroke, posting a time of 27.81. Sophomore Manuela Ferreira (Ibague, Colombia) had the top time in the 50 breaststroke (31.51) for WSU.

Junior Gloria Martinez Perez (Merida, Spain) recorded a time of 53.77 in the 100 freestyle to win the event.

Sophomore diver Alex Geddis-McCririe (Brighton, Mich. / Brighton) won the one-meter springboard event, earning a score of 244.20.

Junior Kristina Novichenko (Seversk, Russia) placed second in the 100 butterfly, earning a time of 58.50.

In the distance events, sophomore Veronica Loock (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) won the 500 freestyle, winning by nearly four seconds with a time of 5:21.47. Senior Kelsey Dischler had the top time in the 1000 freestyle for the Warriors, placing second with a time of 11:01.42.

The WSU 200 medley relay quartet of Maraskine, Ferreira, Martinez Perez and Azambuja won with a time of 1:49.62. Wayne State's 200 freestyle relay squad of Azambuja, Martinez Perez, Maraskine and Heitchue earned a time of 1:38.93.

Wayne State next competes Friday, Jan. 24 at Eastern Michigan for a 5 p.m. dual meet.
