Men's Swimming & Diving Earns Several NCAA Marks at Eastern Michigan

Jachowicz and Molina Perez each dip below qualifying marks in two individual events for WSU

YPSILANTI, Mich.
-- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team dipped below five NCAA qualifying standards Friday at Eastern Michigan University in its last full regular season dual meet of the season. The Warriors won five events, but lost to the Eagles, a Division I opponent, 180-118.

Junior Piotr Jachowicz (Lodz, Poland) recorded two times below NCAA "B" cut qualifying standards, earning first place in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Jachowicz had a time of 55.20 in the 100 breaststroke and posted a time of 1:50.35 in the 200 IM.

Freshman Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Colombia) also posted two times under NCAA "B" cut qualifying marks. Molina Perez had a "B" cut time of 50.47 in the 100 backstroke, to earn second place. His time of 1:50.53 in the 200 backstroke also was under the "B" cut qualifying mark and earned him a second runner-up finish.

Wayne State posted a NCAA "B" cut time in the 200 medley relay on its way to victory. The relay squad of Molina Perez, Jachowicz, freshman Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark) and freshman Till Barthel (Hannover, Germany) combined for a time of 1:30.44.

The Warriors had several other top finishers on Friday. Senior Kristian Larsen (Frederiksberg, Denmark) out-paced the field to win the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.05. Holm finished in the top three in two events, winning the 100 butterfly (50.33) and finishing third in the 100 backstroke (51.12).

Sophomore Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.60) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (58.99). Senior Calvin Reder (Bay City, Mich. / John Glenn) placed second in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:55.11.

Barthel was third in the 50 freestyle (21.36), while freshman Josh Schacht (Schoolcraft, Mich. / Mattawan) finished fourth (21.65). The same duo placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 freestyle. Barthel had a time of 47.03, and Schacht touched in 47.67.

Junior Dylan Szegedi (Oregon, Ohio / St. Francis de Sales) was second on the one-meter springboard (274.20) and had the third-best score on the three-meter board (298.35) to lead the Warrior divers.

Sophomore Jack Dischler (Macomb, Mich. / Henry Ford II) was WSU's top finisher in the 500 freestyle (third, 4:49.40) and senior Jordan Papp (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford) had Wayne State's best place in the 1000 freestyle (fourth, 10:07.02).

WSU placed second in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Barthel, sophomore Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich. / Farmington), Holm and Larsen finished with a time of 3:07.17.

The Warriors will host the two-day WSU Diving Invitational, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, before gearing up for the GLIAC Championships, which are Feb. 12-15 in Geneva, Ohio.
