ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (10-7, 8-6 GLIAC) continued its busy six-day stretch with an afternoon tilt at Grand Valley (13-5, 9-5 GLIAC) inside GVSU Fieldhouse Arena and were able to win its third straight game, 69-64 in overtime over the third-place Laker team.
The first half was extremely physical and a defensive slugfest. GVSU led 12-9 at the 10-minute mark of the opening half. WSU took its first lead of the game after two free throws from senior guard
Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) at the 6:45 mark.
GVSU's Ricardo Carbajal knocked down a jumper at the 2:53 mark to tie the game at 20-20. Sophomore guard
Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) answered with a jumper at the 2:44 mark to give WSU a 22-20 halftime lead.
Both teams continued to trade punches to open the second half.
Jamar Ragland (Detroit, Mich. / Loyola) gave the Warriors a 28-26 advantage with 15:47 left on the clock.
The Green & Gold would lead for the majority of the second half until GVSU would take a 43-41 lead at the 5:22 mark. Toma connected on a clutch triple to give WSU a 44-43 lead with 4:18 to play in regulation.
Laker Ryan Sabin answered with a three of his own to tie the game with just over three minutes remaining. The Warriors would regain the lead and have the advantage until a Darren Kapustka triple gave the Lakers a 52-50 lead with one minute to play.
Senior forward
Gerald Williams-Taylor (Flint, Mich. / Northern) found room underneath the basket and laid it in to tie the game at 52-52. Phillips was unable to connect on a good lock at the end of regulation.
Freshman guard
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) began the overtime frame with a triple. WSU would be able to sink 12-of-16 free throws to escape with the 69-64 win.
Williams-Taylor finished with a career-high 21 points. Also in double-figures were Bishop with a season-high 18 points, Phillips with 12 points and Toma with 10 points. Senior center
Michael Martin (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Phillips grabbed eight rebounds each. Sabin led all scorers with 25 points including 5-of-11 from behind the arc.
WSU will travel to first-place Lake Superior for a 7:30 PM clash on Monday night.
