DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (11-13 overall, 9-12 GLIAC) gave Grand Valley State University (18-7 overall, 14-7 GLIAC) all it could handle on Saturday, but the Lakers prevailed 82-73 by out-scoring the Warriors by nine points in the second half.
A back-and-forth first 20 minutes saw nine lead changes and seven ties. WSU held the largest lead, six points, at 25-19 with 8:47 remaining before intermission, prior to a 16-10 run by GVSU to close out the first half. The Lakers largest lead prior to intermission was two points (13-11 and 18-16).

Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) led all scorers at the break with 15 points which included 6-of-6 from the foul line. Both teams made 11 field goals in the first half, with WSU making one more triple (4-3) but Grand Valley holding a 10-9 edge in free throws made.
The second half began with two ties in the first couple of minutes before an 11-4 run by GVSU put the guests ahead 52-46 at the 13:57 mark on a triple by Rod Woodson.

Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) again made it a three-point game (54-51) but the Lakers answered with an 8-0 pushing their lead to 11 (62-51) with 11:15 left.
Wayne State responded with a 9-3 spurt to cut the deficit to five (65-60) with 8:22 remaining on a conventional three-point play by Phillips.
The Warriors trailed by seven (69-62, 78-71 and 80-73) but could not get any closer the rest of the way.
Phillips led WSU with 22 points, while Coleman contributed 20 points, including a team-best three triples. Senior forward
Jamar Ragland (Detroit, Mich./Loyola) added 11 points and 11 rebounds off the bench for his first career double-double as a Warrior (he had one for Alcorn State vs. Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 12, 2011). Freshman guard
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) totaled 10 points.
Woodson tallied a game-high 29 points on 9-of-10 from the foul line to lead five Lakers in double figures. Chaz Rollins added 13 points with Ricardo Carbajal chipping in with 10 points off the GVSU bench as Grand Valley held a 30-17 edge in bench points. Starters Trevin Alexander and Ryan Sabin contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Wayne State will conclude the season on Thursday (Feb. 27) with a 7:30 p.m. home game against GLIAC-leading Lake Superior.
