Men's Basketball Upended by GLIAC Leader LSSU 84-73

Williams-Taylor leads WSU with 20 points.

Box Score Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (10-8 overall, 8-7 GLIAC) battled GLIAC leading Lake Superior (20-3 overall, 12-3 GLIAC) on the Lakers home court Monday evening, but the hosts prevailed 84-73.

LSSU took half of its first 20 minutes shots from beyond the arc connecting on 8-of-13 triple tries for a 43-37 edge at intermission.  Derek Billing was 5-of-7 on three-point attempts in the first half recording 17 points before the break.

Senior forward Gerald Williams-Taylor (Pontiac, Mich./Northern) led WSU with 12 points and five rebounds in the opening half.

The Lakers jumped out to an 18-8 advantage in the first 5:30 of the game, before the Warriors bounced back with a 27-20 run over the next 12 minutes to pull within three at 38-35.  LSSU ended the first half on a 5-2 run.

Lake Superior kept the offense going to start the second half outscoring WSU 13-8 in the first five minutes for an 11-point advantage (56-45) at the first media timeout.

The game was even for the next five minutes with each team scoring 11 points.  Wayne State pulled within seven (70-63), but that was as close as the Warriors would get.

Williams-Taylor led four Warriors in double figures with 20 points.  Senior guard Chene Phillips (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) chipped in 16 points along with team-high totals of seven rebounds and six assists.  Senior forward Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) contributed 12 points, with freshman guard Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) totaling 10 points.

Billing tallied a game-high 24 points and eight assists, while Cameron Metz and Alex Williams each scored 19 for the Lakers.

Wayne State will begin a two-game home stand this Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Northwood.
