ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Making its first appearance at the NCAA Women's Tennis National Championships in program history Wednesday, the Wayne State University women's tennis team fell in its NCAA Round of 16 match to the two-time defending national champions, Armstrong Atlantic State University. Wayne State (25-5) fell behind 3-0 following the doubles matches and Armstrong Atlantic, the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, closed out the match with two victories in singles.
A highlight in the match for the Warriors was junior
Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield), who after dropping the first set in her singles match, won the second set 6-2 over the No. 2-ranked player in the nation. Moore's match with Armstrong senior Aleksndra Filipovski ultimately remained unfinished after the Pirates clinched the match victory, but Filipovski entered the NCAA Round of 16 with a 21-1 record at No. 1 singles and has been ranked as one of the top three singles players in Division II all year.
Armstrong Atlantic (26-1), featuring two of the top-eight ranked doubles teams in the nation, took an early 3-0 lead over the Warriors. The WSU junior duo of Moore and
Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Que. / École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) dropped an 8-1 match to No. 1-ranked Aleksndra Filipovski and Barbora Krtickova. Moore and Briand finished the season with 24 victories as a doubles pair and went 20-8 at the No. 1 flight.
At the No. 2 doubles flight, sophomore
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and freshman
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) faced the No. 8-ranked doubles team in the country. Poissant and Mitrache dropped an 8-0 match to Armstrong's pairing of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa.
Wayne State's No. 3 doubles team of senior
Jessica Kruczek (Detroit, Mich. / Lakeview) and
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) were defeated by Armstrong's Clara Perez and Carolina Prats-Milan, 8-2.
Armstrong Atlantic picked up its fourth win at No. 3 singles and clinched the match with a victory at the sixth flight in singles. Five of the top six players for Armstrong Atlantic are all ranked nationally in the top 40 in the nation. Hacke, ranked No. 15 in the country, defeated Poissant 6-1, 6-2. At the sixth flight, Wayne State freshman
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) fell 6-1, 6-1.
The loss for the Warriors concludes a season that saw the Warriors record several program firsts. Wayne State, which broke a school record for wins in a season, reached the finals of the GLIAC Tournament for the first time in history and also defeated Northwood University for the first time since 1995. The Warriors also won their first NCAA Midwest Regional title with a victory over the Timberwolves in the regional final.
