DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball program will begin the double round-robin slate against GLIAC South Division opponents with the Jan. 14 contest vs. Tiffin. The Warriors (6-8 overall, 1-7 GLIAC) have lost four straight overall and five consecutive league matches for the first time since Feb. 2-18, 2012. WSU lost just four GLIAC games a year ago in compiling an 18-4 conference record and the Green and Gold were 52-14 in league contests the three previous seasons.
IN THE RANKS Through games of Jan. 11, WSU was ranked in the top-70 nationally in four statistical categories. The Warriors were 47th in total steals (139), 53rd in steals per game (9.9), 66th in fewest turnovers per game (14.9) and 68th in field goal percentage (42.0%). Individually, sophomore
Shannon Wilson was 17th in assist/turnover ratio at 2.48, while senior
Brittany Streetman was 44th in steals per game (2.50) and 46th in total steals (35).
In GLIAC games through Jan. 13, the Warriors are third in both offensive rebounds per game and field-goal attempts per game (63.9), fourth in opponent three-point field goal percentage (36.1%), and fifth in both total rebounds per game (39.2) and fewest turnovers per game.
LAST WEEK'S RECAPWayne State played its first home GLIAC games in nearly a month. In the Jan. 7 setback to Hillsdale, the Warriors led 56-51 after three quarters but the visiting Chargers totaled 27 points over the final 10 minutes with 22 of those points coming from non-starters.
Kristen Long equaled a career-high with three triples in scoring a season-best 13 points. She also dished out three assists to no turnovers.
Ajai Meeks recorded her first double-double of the season as she had her second consecutive double-digit scoring performance with 12 points along with 11 rebounds. Saginaw Valley State tallied the first seven points of the Jan. 9 match-up, and the Warriors were only able to get within two points once (28-26) early in the second period.
Shannon Wilson was 7-of-11 from the floor in scoring a team-high 16 points, with
Ashley Wilson adding 11 points along with a team-best two triples.
WARRIORS TO WATCH Ashley Wilson broke the WSU school record for consecutive free throws made (that she set two years ago) by making her first three attempts on Jan. 7 against Hillsdale before a third quarter miss. Her new school record is 23.
Christina Green has set career-highs in field goals made, free throws made, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals, while
Brittany Streetman has set career-bests in both free throws made and steals. Streetman needs to make two more three-pointers to move into eighth place on the all-time WSU list. Long needs 17 points to reach the 500-point plateau in her Warrior career.
CENTURY MARK IN GAMES PLAYEDOn Jan. 3, seniors
Brittany Streetman and
Kristen Long became just the eighth set of teammates in school history to reach the 100-game played plateau in the same season. The last duo was Deanna Crumpton and Phaebre Colbert three years ago. The first set was WSU Hall of Famer Pearly Cunningham and Ann Roy in 1985-86. The 1994-95 squad had three teammates in Wendy Winter, Missy Cochran and Jennifer Berrios to reach the century plateau.
WSU has played 105 games over the last four seasons compiling a 74-31 record. Streetman and
Kristen Long both played in every game as freshmen, their junior season and this year. They each missed games as a sophomore -- Long (1/9 vs. Hillsdale, 1/11 vs. Findlay) and Streetman dressed but did not play (12/18 at Ashland). The Jan. 3rd game at Ferris State was the 100th game they both had played in together.
According to the NCAA Division II women's basketball active career leader stats, Streetman is 20th in games played and Long is tied-for-21st. The WSU school record is 113 by Lisa Gentry (1981-85). If Streetman doesn't miss any of the upcoming games, she will equal Gentry's record on Feb. 6 vs. Ohio Dominican at home.
Long needs seven minutes to become the 31st player in school history to play 2,000 minutes. Meanwhile, Streetman needs 23 minutes to also reach 2,000.
Streetman is ninth in school history with 113 made three pointers, while Long is 23rd with 163 assists.
SCOUTING THE DRAGONS Tiffin ended an eight-game overall losing streak (and seven-game conference losing skein) with last Saturday's 70-55 home court victory over Lake Superior State. Junior center Bre Nauman leads the Dragons in both scoring (12.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.2 rpg). Senior guard Jordan Fraley is second in scoring (11.7 ppg), but leads the team in steals (13). Freshman guard Ali Schirmer has team-high totals of 32 assists and 26 three-pointers made, and is averaging 10.1 ppg. TU enters the Matthaei with a 3-10 overall mark, along with a 1-7 GLIAC record for first-year head coach Jason Mishler, who spent the last four seasons at Malone leading the Pioneers to the 2014 GLIAC Tournament Championship game.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERSOhio Dominican has won four of its last six games including back-to-back victories last weekend against Lake Superior State (75-51) and Northwood (71-59). Senior forward Melissa Scherpenberg leads the Panthers in scoring (12.3 ppg) and is first in the GLIAC with 11.1 rebounds per game. Junior forward Madi Rittinger leads ODU in field goal percentage (52.7 / 39-74) and assists (24), while junior guard Tori Beth Leader has made a team-high seven triples.
ALL-TIME SERIESWayne State has won the last four meetings to take a 9-7 lead in the all-time series. The first four series meetings were prior to Tiffin joining the GLIAC with each school going 1-1 at home. The Warriors have won the last two meetings at the Matthaei after the Dragons had won the previous two contests in Midtown Detroit.
WSU is undefeated (8-0) against Ohio Dominican in the all-time series which began in Dec. 2010. The Warriors have scored more than 85 points (88-75, 86-76, 87-67) in the last three contests versus ODU. Wayne State has averaged 77 points against the Panthers, while Ohio Dominican has scored an average of 65 points.
STREETMAN HITS A MILESTONEPlaying in her 100th career game on Dec. 30, senior
Brittany Streetman moved into ninth place on the WSU all-time list for three-pointers made with three triples against Cedarville.
Streetman passed Chastidy Miller (2005-09) and trails Beth Wilson (1988-92) by one for eighth place.
This season, Streetman is averaging a team-best 12.4 points per game and is shooting 33.3 percent (22-for-66) from beyond the arc. She has scored in double figures nine times this year and tallied a career-high 26 points against Lewis. The Cedarville contest marked her fourth game this year of at least 20 points. Streetman ranks 13th in school history (min. 30 made) with a 33.2 career three-point field goal percentage (113-340).
